Nah the point is to reduce "waste" (thank you SixSigma !) and to optimize things.
It's not that easier equals better it's just that since you can do a specific task easier and without wasting time why would you stick to a method that is more complicated and takes longer ?
Some things that can be done easier and without effort should be done so (lighting a fire), while in some other things effort is appreciated (a painting masterpiece). Me traveling through your turf - less effort, you trying to pew-pew me - effort. Get it?

If trade routes would have been difficult to travel through (cause of piracy or weather conditions) they would have been abandoned and a new safer route charted.
Like ye olde pirates, in most cases, they were seriously outgunned and outran by most commercial vessels and they had to go "all in" and make the most of what they had in order to get the booty !
And that's where your "smarter" comes in - I have this thing that lets me go about my business in your turf - it's YOUR job to be smarter and try to devise ways to turn my ship into metal scrap, don't call ME a coward or slacker.
Me, I have to be careful and sneaky - you have to overcome cause you're "YARRR" and all evil and pew-pew-ish - if you can' t, well, you're in the wrong business and we can always use more miners. ;)

There are a lot of ways to get a covops.
In exploration for example covops gets me to where I want to go, but I'm "wide open" the rest of the time. Cause if I would be dying 99,9% of times - I wouldn't be doing it, and you'd be all alone in your stretch of "lawlessness" and in space no one can hear you sob.
