Rhea elimination of defunct char names --> block list?

When Rhea arrived with the advertised freeing up of toon names from un-converted trial accounts, I expected my (6000+ name) local chat block list to shrink. It did not, as far as I can tell.

Does that mean that, if a new toon were to adopt one of the purged names, that they will now be blocked in local chat even though they are not the same player?

(Apologies if this has been answered before, but forum search is returning an error every time I use it...)

hah that's easy. someone who plays

Maybe trial characters should have a character limit to chat channels. Enough to type a question, but not spam links...

or, disallow sending links (dunno). sort of. what newbie knows how to post links anyway. it's suspicious behavior.

My block lists have always been, and will always be, completely empty. Except for times when I have to temporary block some exceedingly obnoxious people, but that doesn't last.

I just don't pay any attention to local when I'm in trade hubs or fleet fights. Don't see the need to block people.

this takes me back to when ISK sellers (RMT) were rampant in locals everywhere.

Doubtful.....

I have no proof. But I do know a thing or two about databases, I imagine how the "Block" list works is that when a User searches a name and then Blocks that "Player". The game is merely using the "Name" as a search tool.

A name isn't a player. It's merely an attribute of a player.

A "Player" is just a line in a database, however in a database a particular line is defined by a primary Key, which is generally just a string of random numbers and letters. And then the attributes of that Player are then stored as separate pieces of data on the same line.

So CCP went in a Did an update on the player table and blew up all the old names, however those chars still exist they just don't have a name.

If someone else picks an old name, it will just be bound to a new player and a new primary key and wont effect the old player at all.

If an old player re-subs however and makes a new name, they will still be blocked.

Edit: Can we really not call the table Command..... On an Eve Forum..... Thx CCP.

Has "Jita" in their Corp name... doesn't know about Jita spam.

Cute.

I have taken the liberty of relaying this question to CCP, as I do not know the definite answer myself.
Keep in mind though that I can not say if and/or when a reply will be given.

As I understand it, you block a character, not a name and since no character has been deleted in the purge, nothing will change to your block list.

CCP only changed the character names to some generic (Caldari Citizen number) to free up the names.

Block list, almost certainly, will work on character ID, rather than character name.

It's a lot faster to compare numbers, than it is to compare strings (which is what a name is, in computer terms)

It's also a lot smaller. 64 bit numbers are 8 bytes. That's, at best, 8 letters. (Due to non-english characters, it can be significantly less. UTF-8 can use 4 bytes for a single letter (character, but that's just asking for someone to misunderstand.)

I'd wager one byte per letter, since you can't have any non-ASCII characters in names (and most ASCII punctuation characters are also forbidden).

Could have sworn I'd seen some Russian in names. I'm probably misremembering.

When a character is blocked, they're blocked by characterID.

For instance, if you were to block CCP Falcon, you wouldn't be blocking "CCP Falcon" you'd be blocking the characterID "92532650".

If I changed my name to CCP Rook (which I would never do, because Rooks are poopy and completely inferior), then I'd still be blocked. Character name doesn't matter.

Just the same as if we change someone's character name because it's offensive, they'll still remain in your contact list under their new character name.

Hope this helps. Smile
