The game would probably benefit greatly from gateless constellation travel with gates existing for inter-constellation and inter-regional travel. To jump between star systems within a constellation could require the use of isotopes.

We accept that our vehicles in reality use a fuel source and yet our star ships have no running costs at all. It's not a post-scarcity environment.

A side effect would be allowing ships to at least somewhat bypass gatecamps because they wouldn't *have* to use gates for travel. They can but it isn't necessary. As for arriving from a given foreign location via stardrive it might be a colossal effort but it could be vectored against rough estimated map locations, with the ship arriving within 1million km from the star and taking an equivalent amount of time to decelerate from stardrive warp to a regular warpdrive.

Just a random thought. Probably too much work under the current model of the game but I'd rather have more freedom of movement at a cost than see "player built stargates" which I honestly believe will make null a lot worse not better. At least stardrives would still allow flanking actions at a cost.

That is your opinion yet you state it as a fact. What you are saying is the same as saying DOTA 2 is boring because all you do is farm minions, gank other team, and try to destroy their base. If you don't like the gameplay of a game, why play? I am sure you get bored with most games, which is fine, but perhaps gaming is a hobby you aren't into anymore or need a break from.
