Off the top of my head at least Mozart, Bach, Kraftwerk, Marusha, Makai, Scooter and Tokio Hotel were all pretty succesful outside of germany.

Because they know what we like over here. At least when they made their mark. Fire, phalluses and freaks lol. Did not matter we couldn't understand them. They rocked.

Don't forget Kraftwerk.

Don't take me too seriously though, I like to tease a bit on the forums, but that's only because I love you...

Holger Czukay and Can, the ambient/avant garde band he used to be in. A pretty interesting guy. I lot of his songs are built around transmissions from around the world he picked up on his shortwave radio. And during the age of swaggering guitar gods, his persona was this eccentric nutty professor type, with funny hats.

A more typical Holger one, "Persian Love"

Because Germany and The United states established the Rammstein / David Hasselhoff cultural exchange agreement:

Because the rest of the world has a certain stereotype of Germany that makes them not recognize the majority of German music when they hear it. But Rammstein comes around and everyone is like "OMG THAT'S SO GERMAN"

FT Diomedes: "Reaver, sometimes I wonder what you are thinking when you sit down to post."

Frostys Virpio: "We have to give it to him that he does put more effort than the vast majority in his idea but damn does it sometime come out of nowhere."

Blind Guardian, Helloween, GammaRay, Warlock/Doro.

Most metalheads should recognize at least some of these names.

I always liked this album but... probably not as well known as all those other bands.

The real question should be how comes it that Germany has so few good bands compared to its rather large population.
Over 80 Million people and only a handful of good bands...now compare this to Sweden, with less than 10 million population....
The good music per capita quota seems to be way off here, and it's even worse with movies (We f*cking invented cinema FFS, now look at that shallow and meaningless crap that gets produced here every year).

German bands tend still to be quite competitive when smaller musical niches are concerned, for example goth/darkwave/industrial, like Wumpscut (very influential even on an international scale), or Feindflug.

Some slightly less dark music that is decent yet internationally mostly unknown: Karpatenhund, Klee, Metallspürhunde.

Sodom was mentioned already, but can we ever have enough Sodom ?

I'd like to apologize for the poor quality of the post above and sincerely hope you didn't waste your time reading it. Yes, I do feel bad about it.
