I was under the distinct impression that my ship was always a purple square, and that everyone else flew various types of blue, green, red, yellow, orange, and transparent squares.

Every now and again, said squares will become really fancy and go all flashy.

I'm not sure that a fleet of pink Iteron Mark V's crammed together at the jump gate into Jita is really what this game is missing.

If you do not fit your ship, you are unarmed. ( --> trim it).
Colorization is new but in progress first stage is precoloured stuff, maybe more might come.
But most players dont care to much, since there is enough stuff to care for and ship colors are the least of it.

It reminds me of GTA San Andreas where i stopped painting my cars, cause i was loosing them all the time.

Furthermore, please look at those famous EvE bloodbaths and imagine what you could you see from your ship when its between 400,500, 600 other ships...
