Ship Resigns: Old models made available as relics.

Hello all,

I woke up this morning and checked out dev-blogs; specifically the one containing this image. It occurred to me rather than completely redesigning the ships in a retcon manner so only the new model is available, why not make older models available too as perhaps relic edition (none or limited module slots like the Primea).

For example:

Exequror Class Mk I (Relic Edition/Old model)
Exequror Class Mk II (New model)

From an aesthetic and lore stand point it would make sense, also making the history of ships a legacy to be explored.

TL;DR: Would you be interested in the older models of ships being available as relics and testament to times past.

While I would enjoy historic ships like that, the logistics of keeping the old models graphical technology up to date with the rest of the ships makes this unlikely. I doubt the art team wants to check for bugs on every old model and keep the models up to date every time they decide to update how the engine renders the ships.

Been asked before.

Dev response (which I cannot find) was akin like, "that would be a nightmare to manage".

So, nope, not going to happen.

If CCP did maintain the old models and added new redesigned models it would double the size of the database at a minimum.

Well, that answers that thinks.

Development nightmare for nothing but aesthetics; not worth the time then.

Was just a thought. Many thanks.

Maybe they can fire up an old defunct server with the 2005 code and provide a 2005 client for people to log into and get all teary and nostalgic about.

Not true.

First of all, sets of new textures + models would increase the size of the client.

Second of all, any changes like texture reworks, lighting changes etc. would have to be applied to more models, increasing the amount of work they have to do.

It would be nice for us, however it means a huge amount of work for the devs...

When you change ships it still has to update the database as to which ship you are in and everyone that will load you on grid.

While the OP asks a very relevant question. I have a more important one. Why does the Exequror now look like a caldari ship?

Wouldnt mind seeing some statics made of the old models to be used in exploration sites (ie wrecks in old battle sites) or maybe as part of the NPC traffic in and around stations. Or both.

But as options for capsuleers to fly? No. Not worth dev time to maintain.

It looks like a Star Wars Corellian Corvette and I love it!

I didn't particularly think the Exequror was badly in need of a remodel but I love what they did with it.

I might've misread your post as "It would only affect the object db" - yeah, though the exact impact depends on how the database itself is built. I doubt it'd actually double in size.
