Firefly MMO?

While I doubt I'll have time to play this, I'm stuck here wondering what exactly would one do in an MMO version of Firefly?

Der Linkenstroodle

I mean what do you do, run courier contracts for illegal goods and run around getting shot at? Not trying to slam the series. I think only once in 14 episodes did Serenity ever fire on anything and that was not with any "turret". Most of you know the rest.

(this reminds me that Eve needs the smuggling revamped seriously)

Certainly an indy project. More power to them I guess. I'll follow them on Facebook watch with interest but my game time is limited.

Alright alright those are good ideas.

I just got some strange vision of people playing that game and complaining that they are having trouble not being able to harvest kills or grind silver and being told to go back to Eve.
Shocked

Seriously though, if that player base is there because they like the genre *ahead* of grind they will be lacking the min-maxer kills/ISK obsession that gives the Eve sandbox that spergian underwear smell.

Assume the role of a ship captain – create a crew and customize a ship
Aim to misbehave in space and planet-side adventures
Cross-platform player experience across devices (pick-up and play from anywhere)
Unique social features connecting Firefly fans
Create a shiny ship and explore the Verse

Lol : "shiny ship" . That suggestion needs a trigger warning for anybody coming from Eve.

My concerns are unfounded as it appears that there is yet no game. But that's indy projects for you. One thing I like about projects like this though is that they tend to have ideas that can spread.

This "Cortex" appears to use Unity through the browser and the implication is that it could be used on smart phones. While I don't suspect that people want to fly in Eve via smart phone (sending a text message is enough to make me wish we could go back to the stone age) being able to up the skill que and run industry and other "panel bound" tasks in Eve from a smart phone would be on the level of epic. So that the idea is spreading and the need to stay competitive may bring on that day sooner.

Not entirely true. Back in the day, 2005 the University of Iceland had some students who were working on a project for ccp. They were essentially making mobile version. This went no where once they left, but interest was peaked. I for one would love to have some eve functionality on my phone

Android was mostly an idea in 2005. Surely things have progressed since. Not sure if we'd get the same quality of graphics though.

The closest anybody has come to Eve on a smart phone was to use VPN into a system that had the client installed and run the client on the remote system. It was not .... elegant... to say the least. I remember a forum post from years ago - maybe 2009 or 2010 - where someone posted images of that.

From a Q&A on their FB Page:

Quote:

Firefly Online Game Yes, death is real in Firefly Online and (mostly) permanent. And no one is safe...

Firefly Online Game Yep. I don't want to be too spoilery here, but there is at least one death that's unavoidable in the game. And it's presented in such a way that we hope it'll have real emotional resonance for the player.

This game *is* based on a Joss Whedon show, after all

Other stuff:
Ships won't initially have weapons.
Travel can be set up to "jump" eliminating actual travel time not NOT random encounters.

No pirates in the beginning.

If you want a ship with crews.. well they have 'em. Somebody asked and this is the answer:

Quote:
Firefly Online Game Hey Josh, well, that's a big question! And the answer depends on context: For example, in combat, you'll be able to click on a member of your crew and issue orders (move here, take cover, shoot). Depending on their overall happiness and loyalty to you, they may or may not choose to listen

For less... confrontational situations, you'll have control panels that will be available contextually that allow you to do things like equip your crew or upgrade your ship. Of course, all things in their place – you won't be able to change engines mid-flight. For that, you're going to have to park your boat at a shipyard facility with compatible upgrades available.

You will also be able to place your crew inside your ship, assign 'em stations and even a cabin (that you can decorate!) All of which will effect your ship's efficiency, crew happiness and your ability to repeal boarders, should the need arise.

So no or few ship weapons but ships can be boarded.

This will be interesting.

It's certainly a good universe for an MMORPG as it's very diverse and interesting.

The Firefly series was something that popped up in conversation the otehr day when i was talking about potential themes for MMOs (Waterworld MMO being my personal fave idea)

The games look like its very early in its development but i'll certainly be keeping track of its progress.

Although...

PLEASE DON’T TELL ME THIS IS ONE OF THEM “SOCIAL” GAMES?

Firefly Online is a single player game, supported by social features that give you the opportunity to connect with friends and fellow Firefly Online users in new and unique ways. Got a shiny new Callahan rifle that you don’t need? Send it to your friend as a gift. Ship broken down and drifting? Send out a distress call and one of your fellow Browncoats might just tow you to safety. Have an idea for a Firefly story you’re just itching to share? Create a job using your story as a basis and publish it on the Cortex for others in the Verse to enjoy!

Hmm.. that doesnt really inspire me

Yeah I'm wondering what they mean by that. Cut it out entirely and it becomes a boring single player game that once fully experienced there's no point in sticking around. Give too much of the mechanics to forced social interaction and they risk facilitating a play style that could be based entirely on preventing others from playing the game, like killing everything that moved for no reason.
Were it up to me I would compromise it: if you want to just mindlessly kill everything you become a reaver whether you wanted to be one or not (meaning your ship will emit the signature of that "suicidal" lack of core containment, be covered in bodies, etc. and there will be no harmless sidling up to other players to gank them) . The Q&A thread alluded to the possibility of rolling a char for alliance or reavers too but I did not pick up on that being a solid feature. I would imagine that playing for the alliance would be a bigger path towards wrecking the game for others since that's basically what the alliance does anyway.
