In a former life I spent a great deal of time teaching other players how to PvP in eve. I have rejoined the game and I am potentially embarking on another project and so I would like to survey the new players. I am curious what the state of the player base is about PvP.

1) Are you Interested in PvP?
Yes

2) If you are interested and have not participated in it, then why haven't you done so?
N/A

2) If you are interested then what is your motivation for PvP?
I like listening to the wonderful sound of a POD being ejected into space

4) If you are not interested why not?
NA

5) If you are not interested in PvP is there ever a circumstance where you would be willing to shell out a large amount of risk for such protection? If so, what prevents you from doing so? Trustworthiness of mercenaries, limited contract system?

My alliance keeps Break-A-Wish on retainer and we PvP. Not a mutually exclusive question.

6) How many skipploints do you think it requires to be effective in PvP?

We like to start noobs off gatecamping so something with enough EHP to take a shot from gate guns. Usually T1 cruiser.

7) What kind of ship do you think is the minimum to effectively PvP?

I dislike the start in a T1 frig advice. You often don't live long enough to learn much. Cruisers much more durable.

8) What do you think is the most important facet of PvP in eve?

Willingness to try.

9) If you could have anything related to PvP within the current game mechanics, what would it be?

Less Combat Booster drawbacks.

10) What would be your PvP goal in eve?

I want to tackle and kill at least 1 of every non super ship in the game.

11) When it comes to PvPers in eve, what is your general opinion of them?

Get to know each individual. They're all different.

12) What do you think is the most broken mechanic in PvP?

Tough question. Tie between no motivation for defenders in hi sec war decs and super proliferation.

13) When it comes to PvP in eve what is the most difficult aspect of it from your point of view?

I'm terrible at kiting.

Why not Smile

1) Are you Interested in PvP?
Yes, that's why I play this game
2) If you are interested and have not participated in it, then why haven't you done so?
not applicable
2) If you are interested then what is your motivation for PvP?
not applicable
4) If you are not interested why not?
not applicable
5) If you are not interested in PvP is there ever a circumstance where you would be willing to shell out a large amount of risk for such protection? If so, what prevents you from doing so? Trustworthiness of mercenaries, limited contract system?
not applicable
6) How many skipploints do you think it requires to be effective in PvP?
as many as it takes to fit a web and scram
7) What kind of ship do you think is the minimum to effectively PvP?
one that can fit a web, scram, and prop mod
8) What do you think is the most important facet of PvP in eve?
having fun with a group
9) If you could have anything related to PvP within the current game mechanics, what would it be?
I used to want some sort of system to allow solo pvp, but I have come to realoze that group pvp is where it's at. I think things are fine as they are I guess
10) What would be your PvP goal in eve?
currently my goal is to get a couple more solo kills, but I am learning that solo just isn't fun, and more masochist. I just want to fly with my alliance and fight other small gangs. I always fantasize aboute defeating goonswarm :-)
11) When it comes to PvPers in eve, what is your general opinion of them?
Most of them are fine, but the loud minority of elitists are pretty annoying
12) What do you think is the most broken mechanic in PvP?
I can't think of anything off the top of my head really, everything has its use
13) When it comes to PvP in eve what is the most difficult aspect of it from your point of view?
It is just so fast paced sometimes, and there's so much information on my screen that I just don't have time to react and actually try and affect the situation. It usually ends up as a rock-sciccors-paper of even how i start the engagement (note that this mostly applies to frig pvp)

1) Are you Interested in PvP?
Yes.

2) If you are interested and have not participated in it, then why haven't you done so?
Not applicable. PvP is mainly what I do.

2) If you are interested then what is your motivation for PvP?
Challenge, conflict, camaraderie. Making a difference. Having fun.

4) If you are not interested why not?
N/A

5) If you are not interested in PvP is there ever a circumstance where you would be willing to shell out a large amount of risk for such protection? If so, what prevents you from doing so? Trustworthiness of mercenaries, limited contract system?
N/A

6) How many skipploints do you think it requires to be effective in PvP?
Define "effective". I have seen new players with hardly a couple days of skill points change the outcome of fights, or solo targets much beyond their theoretical ability. I have also seen high skill point characters (like myself) do stupid stuff and get killed. Skill points are largely irrelevant.

7) What kind of ship do you think is the minimum to effectively PvP?
Frigate.

8) What do you think is the most important facet of PvP in eve?
Thinking about it. The key to winning is being prepared before the fight, observant during it, and analyzing what happened after the fight. Blindly charging in and pushing F1 makes you a tool.

9) If you could have anything related to PvP within the current game mechanics, what would it be?
Huh?

10) What would be your PvP goal in eve?
Replace "would" with "is". Have fun, make friends, maybe get a degree of infamy.

11) When it comes to PvPers in eve, what is your general opinion of them?
When it comes to people who chew gum IRL, what is your general opinion of them? They're people doing whatever it is they do. Nothing special about them.

12) What do you think is the most broken mechanic in PvP?
Off-grid boosting. Second place narrowly goes to ECM.

13) When it comes to PvP in eve what is the most difficult aspect of it from your point of view?
Being prepared for all contingencies so my PvPing is not cut short by a trap or camp.

1) Are you Interested in PvP?
Yes

2) If you are interested and have not participated in it, then why haven't you done so?
N/A

2) If you are interested then what is your motivation for PvP?
Why are there two question 2s? My motivation is fun. There's an intense rush of excitement and a punch of fear and then a lot of giddiness when it's all over.

4) If you are not interested why not?
N/a

5) If you are not interested in PvP is there ever a circumstance where you would be willing to shell out a large amount of risk for such protection? If so, what prevents you from doing so? Trustworthiness of mercenaries, limited contract system?
N/A but if it were, no I wouldn't pay for protection. That's called racketeering and I'm not the type to give into that kind of thing.

6) How many skipploints do you think it requires to be effective in PvP?
That really depends on the type of PVP. You seem to only be talking about direct confrontation/pewpewing each other PVP, but there are lots of kinds. It takes no more skillpoints than you are born with to participate in some forms of PVP and others take a lot of time and practice and millions of skillpoints to be effective at. Be more specific if you want specific answers.

7) What kind of ship do you think is the minimum to effectively PvP?
Again, it depends on the form of PVP. Some forms don't require you to ever leave the station. Be more specific. Your survey is poorly thought out.

8) What do you think is the most important facet of PvP in eve?
I think all PVP benefits from doing it with other people on your side. You can of course solo a lot of PVP situations, but they're a lot more fun with a couple friends on comms and everyone helping everyone else be successful.

9) If you could have anything related to PvP within the current game mechanics, what would it be?
I have no idea, honestly. I've only been playing EvE for a few months and it's my first time playing any PVP type game. I don't know enough about PVP game mechanics to begin to ponder ways to improve it.

10) What would be your PvP goal in eve?
Fun. Purely fun. I don't care about ISK, this game is not about money for me. I think too many people focus on ISK as the way they measure success in the game. I do lots of things in game that provide very little ISK, relatively speaking, but I find them extremely fun so I do them. PVP is one of those things, the kind of PVP I participate in. Not so lucrative, but lots of fun. I can buy a PLEX to sell if I need money, but I refuse to turn this game into a second job.

11) When it comes to PvPers in eve, what is your general opinion of them?
They are people to be wary of, but not necessarily to be afraid of. I find most will happily blow your ship up, but are equally happy to chat with you after, offer tips, maybe throw you some better fit ideas or at the very least not jerks about the fact that they just owned you. :) They're playing their own version of the game that makes them happy and who am I to say their way is wrong?

12) What do you think is the most broken mechanic in PvP?
As I said above, no clue.

13) When it comes to PvP in eve what is the most difficult aspect of it from your point of view?
I think it's the perception that if you're not blowing other players up (or assisting in doing so), you're not PVPing. The second you open the game, you are PVPing in some way. The second you undock, you are unquestionably participating in PVP. Whether you are soloing missions (oh hey, that ninja looter is now scanning you down preparing to steal your loot so you are now PVPing with that person whether you know it or not), or mining (oh hey, CODE is watching you, you're about to be asploded unless you pay up to their knee-busters), or market trading (damn, you just bought up the last batch of some module another player truly needed and now they're going to die in an upcoming battle because of you. PVP without ever undocking). PVP is not just about going out looking for a fight. PVP is the entire game and everything any player does in it.

1. Yeah.
3. Depends on my mood.
6. 20m.
7. Navy Frig.
8. Competition.
9. I'd want PvP to be more about necessity and survival, rather than padding KBs. Ban alts, ban multi-client playstyles too.
10. I don't have time for goals.
11. I don't like them.
12. Immortality.
13. Micromanaging multiple clients.

First, I am going to assume you are restricting this to space combat PvP and not the half dozen other forms of PvP in this game.

1) No.
2) I have done it, and learned my preference.
3) N/A
4) Adrenaline leaves me feeling sick.
5) In eve there is no such thing as true protection, you are always at risk. So why pay?
6) A few hours of training
7) Frigate
8) Enjoying it sufficiently to practice and get good at it.
9) Have some way to avoid it other than never undocking.
10) See above
11) Those out for good fights and fun with other PvP oriented players are fine. The "griefers" I can do without.
12) Having some way to avoid it other than never undocking.
13) For me: Finding some way to suppress the adrenaline rush. For others, it seems to be finding a good group to be involved with.

1) Are you Interested in PvP?

Love it

2) If you are interested and have not participated in it, then why haven't you done so?

For the first year of play i was stuck in the pve rut, had friends which kept me playing but none that actively shot people in the face

2) If you are interested then what is your motivation for PvP?

the rush, the challange, the wins, the losses and the goddame funny **** you only see in pew pew.

4) If you are not interested why not?

na

5) If you are not interested in PvP is there ever a circumstance where you would be willing to shell out a large amount of risk for such protection? If so, what prevents you from doing so? Trustworthiness of mercenaries, limited contract system?

na, though this is my primary activity in eve

6) How many skipploints do you think it requires to be effective in PvP?

However many you start with.

7) What kind of ship do you think is the minimum to effectively PvP?

you can d-scan in a pod so you don't even need a ship to contribute

8) What do you think is the most important facet of PvP in eve?

the fact that someone can always ruin your day, regardless of where you are or what you do.

9) If you could have anything related to PvP within the current game mechanics, what would it be?

I would like to see corporations become worth defending as an inherent property of themselves.

10) What would be your PvP goal in eve?

Fun

11) When it comes to PvPers in eve, what is your general opinion of them?

they tend to be the more well adjusted players I.E. at peace with eve's nature, noticeably less likely to become "emotional" about loss or judgemental of the play style of others (exceptions apply, obviously)

12) What do you think is the most broken mechanic in PvP?

OGB's (i say this with a dedicated ogb alt) its too good not to and they're practically (though not entirely) untouchable in high-sec

13) When it comes to PvP in eve what is the most difficult aspect of it from your point of view?

Knowledge,
you can build player skills to offset sp disparity's but after almost two years of play i still feel like im thick pig **** compared to some of the lads i fly with.

1) Are you Interested in PvP?
Yes

2) If you are interested and have not participated in it, then why haven't you done so?
I've participated a little in FW, but I've found that in solo PvP you don't just get wrecked; you don't even get to participate in a fight

2) If you are interested then what is your motivation for PvP?
I like challenging myself and improving my skills

4) If you are not interested why not?

5) If you are not interested in PvP is there ever a circumstance where you would be willing to shell out a large amount of risk
for such protection? If so, what prevents you from doing so? Trustworthiness of mercenaries, limited contract system?

6) How many skipploints do you think it requires to be effective in PvP?

Not many. Certainly way less than I have.

7) What kind of ship do you think is the minimum to effectively PvP?
Frigate

8) What do you think is the most important facet of PvP in eve?
Having friends

9) If you could have anything related to PvP within the current game mechanics, what would it be?
No idea what this question means

10) What would be your PvP goal in eve?
Small gang roams, maybe some anti-piracy or whiteknighting

11) When it comes to PvPers in eve, what is your general opinion of them?
Very vague question

12) What do you think is the most broken mechanic in PvP?
From my limited knowledge, I'd have to say bumping. The collision mechanics in this game are just bad.

13) When it comes to PvP in eve what is the most difficult aspect of it from your point of view?
Finding a good fight, where one side doesn't have a massive advantage.

The psychological analysis of, and the prediction of actions by you to your opponent.
Knowing exactly how your opponent may react (or will lack reaction) can give you the upper-hand in many circumstances and grants you a plethora of options.

1: Yes, but only incidental.
2: Survival. Eve is a PVP game. Plus RvB is a hell of a lot of fun.
5: I'll answer this one because it pertains to me. I wouldn't ever shell out isk for protection. I just don't see the need.
6: 5+ million. It depends on what skills though.
7: Frigates are fun.
8: Preparation. Ship fittings and practice.
9: I don't understand what you mean?
10: Not to die every time I try it haha.
11: It varies. Leet pvpers are pretty funny, the chill guys are where it's at though.
12: Jamming.

1) Are you Interested in PvP?

yes, it's a huge part of why i play this game.

2) If you are interested and have not participated in it, then why haven't you done so?

N/A

3) If you are interested then what is your motivation for PvP?

at the core, it's a contest. but it's deeper than that. i still have so much to learn, despite the fact i've been playing for years.

4) If you are not interested why not?

N/A

5) If you are not interested in PvP is there ever a circumstance where you would be willing to shell out a large amount of risk for such protection? If so, what prevents you from doing so? Trustworthiness of mercenaries, limited contract system?

N/A

6) How many skill points do you think it requires to be effective in PvP?

it takes very few skill points to be effective. this is one of the biggest misconceptions that new players have coming into eve. it's a fact that after just a few days, a brand new pilot can perform one of the most important roles in fleet ops - tackling.

7) What kind of ship do you think is the minimum to effectively PvP?

it turns out that one of the first ships that pilots learn to fly is one of the most effective in PVP - the frigate. it's also insanely fun to fly.

8) What do you think is the most important facet of PvP in eve?

knowing your strengths and the weaknesses of your enemies.

9) If you could have anything related to PvP within the current game mechanics, what would it be?

i assume you're referring to changes? if so, the continuing effort to balance ships.

10) What would be your PvP goal in eve?

my goal, for now, is to become a better solo PVP pilot. i have a lot of small gang PVP experience, but very little solo experience.

11) When it comes to PvPers in eve, what is your general opinion of them?

when i first started playing eve (2009), i was completely unaware of how to PVP and what it was all about. i got ganked several times in high sec and soon came to realize that i needed to develop PVP skills if i wanted to survive. my general opinion of PVPers is that we drive the economy of new eden. it's a constant cycle of destruction and construction, and i wouldn't have it any other way. PVP is at the core of what makes this game what it is.

12) What do you think is the most broken mechanic in PvP?

to be honest, i'm not sure. from what i've experienced, i think the PVP mechanics work very well.

13) When it comes to PvP in eve what is the most difficult aspect of it from your point of view?

learning what the capabilities of other ships are - especially ones you don't regularly fly. that's the biggest hurdle i'm still running into.

Answers of EVE newbee (04/2014)

1) Are you Interested in PvP?
Yes, I build my entire business in EVE to support PVP in terms of ISK...

2) If you are interested and have not participated in it, then why haven't you done so?
not applicable

2) If you are interested then what is your motivation for PvP?
3xF: Fun, Fear and Fame :)

4) If you are not interested why not?
not applicable

5) If you are not interested in PvP is there ever a circumstance where you would be willing to shell out a large amount of risk for such protection? If so, what prevents you from doing so? Trustworthiness of mercenaries, limited contract system?
not applicable

6) How many skillpoints do you think it requires to be effective in PvP?
Fleet PVP is not the matter of skillpoints. Solo PVP however... is more SP demanding... in terms of target selection :))

7) What kind of ship do you think is the minimum to effectively PvP?
Minimum: rookie ship, more seriously – t1 frigate, ofc.

8) What do you think is the most important facet of PvP in eve?
3xF for some, pain-in-your-ass for many.

9) If you could have anything related to PvP within the current game mechanics, what would it be?
It is fine as it is.

10) What would be your PvP goal in eve?
If you look at my killboard (not impressive at all at the moment) you will notice that since I started PVPing (by will, not by mistake) I do mostly solos, with target ships of equal size or bigger then I am. My goal is to be efficient in such fights and recently – also in fights where I am outnumbered.

11) When it comes to PvPers in eve, what is your general opinion of them?
Suicide gankers (although I tried it once to learn Concord reactions), gate and station campers do not deserve the name of PVPers. (The only exception for the two latest is a war.) But they are valid TARGETS. I respect all others cause they have guts.

12) What do you think is the most broken mechanic in PvP?
Dualboxing with a boosting alt in “solo” PVP. I know such pilots in FW zone and I treat them in a manner they deserve – they are present but non-existing. Some of them claim themselves PVP gods or nr 1s... The place for boosting is in fleet/war operations.

13) When it comes to PvP in eve what is the most difficult aspect of it from your point of view?
There are two:
1. Hours spent in pyfa/eft to analyze infinite numbers of potential hostile setups and plan efficient answers on hardware and tactical level.
2. To know where and what to engage and when to ruuuuun away.

Im in a type-y mood so here you go, player under a month old.

1) yes
2) Glory? Fun? Its better than mining?
6) Depends, I was out doing FW, despite I ran from pvp, very early on. I would feel comfortable with around 60-90 days of training I think, I like having options, early game pvp lacks that.
7) no ship minimums, little SP minimum in a large fleet.
8) Teamwork, communication, strategy (having an actual plan)
9) Im too new to have an opinion on that
10) be part of a null sec fleet perhaps, not sure tbh
11) they know more about this games pvp than I do, and probably know exactly what im doing.
12) too new to have opinion on this

13) Not knowing the enemys ship, his ship fittings, his capabilities, how to approach that particular ship and or group of ships. I feel the enemy in pvp knows exactly my capabilities and how to approach me, while I haven't a clue if their ship is even a frigate/destroyer/ect and if it will kite me, ewar me, or get in my face and punch me. Theres a LOT of ships and tactics to digest on top of knowing what to do with your own ship.

6. Depends on PvP type. As little as 100k to 5m to 20m.
7. Frigate
8. Fun
9. No ECM
10. Make a rather sexy PvP alliance
11. A lot are nice guys, a lot of arrogant, some are just ******* stupid.
12. ECM. Even if I get lucky and their jams dont work, before I can lock again im jammed out. Its really fun for both sides.
13. Solo PvP or FCing.

generally yes- having to wait hours until the fleet forms, massive Tidi or endless roams without enemy contact however often reduce my desire to pew.

2) If you are interested and have not participated in it, then why haven't you done so?
N/A

3) If you are interested then what is your motivation for PvP?
competition I guess.

This is a trick question, right?

7) What kind of ship do you think is the minimum to effectively PvP?
Another trick question?

8) What do you think is the most important facet of PvP in eve?
Uh...like..warping away in one piece while your enemy is left in space deep frozen?

9) If you could have anything related to PvP within the current game mechanics, what would it be?
hu?

10) What would be your PvP goal in eve?
My former, present and future goal is to solo kill every pilot who killed me before. Problem is some of them were really good...Ugh

11) When it comes to PvPers in eve, what is your general opinion of them?
Diverse bunch of people, wouldn't place all of them in one category

12) What do you think is the most broken mechanic in PvP?
Tracking. Your guns should have no problem tracking an enemy if you are circling in near perfect circles.
Also, I loathe that drones have become a primary weapon system now and a quite powerful one, too. Automatically applied damage shouldn't be that powerful.

13) When it comes to PvP in eve what is the most difficult aspect of it from your point of view?
The massive amount of different ships.. there was a time when I kind of knew what fitting to expect of a ship..it's getting harder and harder with more ships added every expansion...I don't even want to think how hard it must be for newbies to learn about 100+ ship types.

I'd like to apologize for the poor quality of the post above and sincerely hope you didn't waste your time reading it. Yes, I do feel bad about it.
