It takes literally zero effort to find a miner to gank versus, say, hunting a cov ops exploration vessel doing null-sec sites. Both are harvesting, but one takes an active interest in making sure not to get caught while the other is generally watching Netflix.

It's not necessarily "hate", just disdain that someone is affecting the game without really playing it.

Sorry, but I couldn't help smiling. Next time you try to gank one of my new miners, make the effort and actually use that ship scanner you fit before you decide to engage. I train tank first, yield second P.

Miners are adorable. They are the hard working class. They put their life on the line for us. If it wasn't for them, we wouldn't have our ships.

I have removed some rule breaking posts and those quoting them. As always I let some edge cases stay.
Please people, keep it on topic and above all civil!

The Rules:
4. Personal attacks are prohibited.

Commonly known as flaming, personal attacks are posts that are designed to personally berate or insult another forum user. Posts of this nature are not beneficial to the community spirit that CCP promote and as such they will not be tolerated.

5. Trolling is prohibited.

Trolling is a defined as a post that is deliberately designed for the purpose of angering and insulting other players in an attempt to incite retaliation or an emotional response. Posts of this nature are disruptive, often abusive and do not contribute to the sense of community that CCP promote.

27. Off-topic posting is prohibited.

Off-topic posting is permitted within reason, as sometimes a single comment may color or lighten the tone of discussion. However, excessive posting of off-topic remarks in an attempt to derail a thread may result in the thread being locked, or a forum warning being issued to the off-topic poster.

Thread reopened.

So why the hate? QuestionQuestion

Relevant!

I think the real reason for Miner hate is the strange though process of the common EVE PvPer. They think like: "Heck, why can't I find people to shoot? If those dastardly High Sec Miners stopped their tomfoolery and PvPed more, I would have something to shoot!"

I like to think that if we are playing a Sandbox MMO, why shouldn't we build sand castles?

I agree there are two sort of people.

One is the PvP player, who understands that this is a PvP game and that anything within the rules is permitted by the rules, and thus keeps whining about things he/she doesn't like resticted to things like ship balance.

The other is the PvE player, who "understands" that this is a PvE game with "optional" PvP elements. To this person, things that interfere with their playstyle is a problem, and problems as everyone knows, are things to be fixed.

Thus you get the endless torrent of miners and haulers and mission runners and renters who then come to forums or to local chat to complain that the thing that interferes with their playstyle needs to be changed.

As a whole, most PvP players simply don't care about the quiet PvE players. WE don't like or dislike them, we simply care nothing about them. They just don't matter to much of anything.

But the PvE players who come to the forums full or righteous anger to "fix" the horrible situation that is PvP players inconveniencing their playstyle in some way?

Those we loathe.

So go forth and play your PvE style. But if you whine and someone move you from nonexistence to active dislike, then you are welcome to shove it.

I don't hate miners, I'm just protecting the ecosystem that you're destroying. Those asteroids are home to amazing sources of microbial life where nothing else could survive, feeding off the precious minerals that you're taking to satisfy your greed.

And for the record, yes, EVE is entirely PVP. PVP = player vs player. By mining those resources, you are denying them from another player, making your activities PVP in nature. This makes you a target for anyone that might have wanted those resources. It also makes you a target for people that enjoy seeing things explode so.... welcome to EVE.

You can build all the sandcastles you like, as long as you're prepared to defend them from people coming to kick them over. If you can't do that, then you're gonna lose your sandcastle.

You've got the common thought process of the 'common pvp'er' completely wrong, by the way. The real one is, "everything undocked is a target". Frankly, I don't care if you learn to PVP or not. If you make yourself so easy to kill, that's really only your own problem.

You want to know why people hate miners?

I was talking to a guy on Reddit the other day about precisely that, and here is what he told me.

Quote:
Newbro here. Finally got my mining barge after pushing for mining from the start. Hate it. I'm too cautious to afk mine and I hate the idea of even having to do that. I want to play this game. I feel like I don't have any other available thing to do. I understand I won't be rich right away but I really can't see myself doing nonstop mining haul after mining haul. It's not fun at all. I feel like the only thing I can do is queue up a month's worth of skills and come back with a little more available to me and Plex it off. It doesn't sound fun to me in the slightest. I'm so lost in this game and I don't know if I should even continue.

That's why I hate miners.

That makes 0 sense to me. You hate miners because one newbro decided mining was what he wanted to do, but then realised he didn't want to mine after trying it?

Well then I hate explorers because I know someone who tried it and hated it.

I'm not even sure why he bothers to play the game.

VETO!

Since the Prospect is here, I actually DO enjoy mining now and then. OK, it's not like im geting rich in the proces, but except real PVP, there is nothing like plain ignoring 30+ NPCs in a "hidden"-Belt, see a Navy-Comet warping In, Zoom Off with MWD and see the Comet scramed and shred to pieces by the NPCs you did simply speedtank... AND having 10.000m³ of Lowsec-Ore in your Cargo Big smile

The cool thing about sand castles is building them. After all, at the end of the day, the waves will still come and destroy them. Plus, I prefer my sand castle crude and bucket shaped.

I'm inclined to agree with Sol on this. What you're enjoying isn't so much the mining itself as the adventure of staying alive while mining. The actual process of mining is tedious and stressful to most to try and do it right without being sploded. It would be nice if the act was more interactive, but ultimately getting any real enjoyment out of it requires socialization with others while doing so, or going adrenaline junkie like yourself.

Those who can't be bothered to do it in a sane and safe fashion end up becoming victims of natural selection, and naturally this makes them angry. Ill tempered is a common descriptor I'd use for most miners, and I think a good deal of this is due to them trying to convince themselves that they actually enjoy this task they hate so much that they can't be bothered to do it safely or properly.

Come hell or high water, this sick world will know I was here.
