Mining Question

The Tech 1 "strip Miner" tooltip says it mines 540 m3 per 180 seconds.... But the Tech 2 "modulated Strip Miner II" only mines 360 m3 over the same amount of time.

Am I reading this wrong? Shouldn't the Tech 2 be superior to the Tech 1?

Also, what is the difference between a strip miner and a deep core miner? Is the deep core only for high-value ore like Mercoxit?

T2 Strip miners can fit mining crystals which increase the yield to above the T1 Strip Miner levels.

Thank you.

So, without the appropriate crystal fitted, it's worse than the T1 variant? Good to know.

Correct.

I also just noticed your question about the Deep Core Mining laser. Basically they are the only ones that can mine Mercoxit, unless something has changed over the years. They can mine normal ores as well.

Essentially the whole idea behind the specific crystals is when you want a whole lot of X, you fit X Crystals. Those crystals will wear down over time. Eventually you will get the hang of how many you need and what kinds you need.

IIRC the net yield increase is something like ~15% with T2 crystals vs the T1 strip miner. Sometimes in large fleets a T1 strip is preferable so you don't have to worry about what rock you're mining.

With the Modulated Strip Miner II you also have the choice to fit either Tech1 or Tech2 mining crystals. You'll have to do the math and decide what is most cost effective for your needs. The skills needed for the mining crystals "[Asteroid Type] Processing" also give you a 2% bonus per level on refining yield, so it all forms a natural progression if you are planning on doing some serious roid bashing.
