In a former life I spent a great deal of time teaching other players how to PvP in eve. I have rejoined the game and I am potentially embarking on another project and so I would like to survey the new players. I am curious what the state of the player base is about PvP.

1) Are you Interested in PvP?
2) If you are interested and have not participated in it, then why haven't you done so?
2) If you are interested then what is your motivation for PvP?
4) If you are not interested why not?
5) If you are not interested in PvP is there ever a circumstance where you would be willing to shell out a large amount of risk for such protection? If so, what prevents you from doing so? Trustworthiness of mercenaries, limited contract system?
6) How many skill points do you think it requires to be effective in PvP?
7) What kind of ship do you think is the minimum to effectively PvP?
8) What do you think is the most important facet of PvP in eve?
9) If you could have anything related to PvP within the current game mechanics, what would it be?
10) What would be your PvP goal in eve?
11) When it comes to PvPers in eve, what is your general opinion of them?
12) What do you think is the most broken mechanic in PvP?
13) When it comes to PvP in eve what is the most difficult aspect of it from your point of view?

Thanks for taking the moments to read. Please no flaming. I will read every answer. Debate = good. Flaming = bad. You know the difference.

Wouldnt this be easier with some sorta google docs thingy-ma-bob? That way you can compile it neat little graphs and ****?

EDIT: Answering your questions anyways, been playing for over a year and I still consider myself a nooblet.

1) Are you Interested in PvP?
1A) Yes, came to EVE for the PVP

2) If you are interested and have not participated in it, then why haven't you done so?
2A) NA

3) If you are interested then what is your motivation for PvP?
3A) For the corpse, the loot and pretty pew pew? It's fun. What else is there?

4 and 5 are NA

6) How many skipploints do you think it requires to be effective in PvP?
6A) Whatever the amount it takes to get into an Atron, fit meta 0 blasters to whore on KM and a Point. Hero Tackle FTW

7) What kind of ship do you think is the minimum to effectively PvP?
7) You can PVP in any ship. Even Rookie SHip Duels happen all the time.

8) What do you think is the most important facet of PvP in eve?
8) Conflict. As longs there is conflict people in EVE will fight. I want that, You can't have this. This my shiney ship, I want to blow you up. So on and so forth. Conflict is the MAIN driving force for PvP

9) If you could have anything related to PvP within the current game mechanics, what would it be?
9A) Change the Wardec mechanics to adjust it more evenly, Give Defending corps things to fight over.

10) What would be your PvP goal in eve?
10A) A 250 to 0 solo streak . =D

11) When it comes to PvPers in eve, what is your general opinion of them?

1) Are you Interested in PvP?
EVE is PvP mandatory. Don't play if you're not interested in participating.

2) If you are interested and have not participated in it, then why haven't you done so?
I'm a non-combatant, so while I may participate in PvP it is generally not seen as such. I avoid combat because adrenaline generally does mess up my ability to think and act, thus I would perform terrible in a combat situation.

3) If you are interested then what is your motivation for PvP?
Competition improves immersion, dynamics of the game experience and gives achievements more substance.

4) If you are not interested why not?
See above.

5) If you are not interested in PvP is there ever a circumstance where you would be willing to shell out a large amount of risk for such protection? If so, what prevents you from doing so? Trustworthiness of mercenaries, limited contract system?
Mercenary contracting, bounty contracting, war wager contracts, peace and cease-fire contracts, all kinds of diplomacy and sov/structure transfer contracts would be a great addition to the game. If you have to pay through your nose to save your assets, you already failed in the planning phase of your endeavour.

6) How many skipploints do you think it requires to be effective in PvP?
In a group, you only need to be able to fit a scram on your noobship and you have a purpose. Too cheap to shoot at but too annoying to ignore.

7) What kind of ship do you think is the minimum to effectively PvP?
Whatever ship has 1 hull hitpoint more than your enemy in the end.

8) What do you think is the most important facet of PvP in eve?
Fun.

9) If you could have anything related to PvP within the current game mechanics, what would it be?
Contracting services mentioned in 5)

10) What would be your PvP goal in eve?
Never get on a killmail unless I chose to.

11) When it comes to PvPers in eve, what is your general opinion of them?
They're... people, I guess.

12) What do you think is the most broken mechanic in PvP?
The most broken and most difficult to fix is the number scaling. TiDi blobs do not sound like fun.

13) When it comes to PvP in eve what is the most difficult aspect of it from your point of view?
Satisfying both sides of the fight.

1. No.

2. See above.

3. See above above.

4. I'm too old to fight anymore. You young pups handle that. I'm gonna sit over here and pretend to be wise. (Seriously).

5. If I ever need a fast gun, I have someone to call - competent and very willing.

6. How many skipploints does it take to post effectively? Hmmm?

7. Everybody say, "FRIGATE!"

8. I'd say the most important PvP in EVE is when it's protecting corporate or alliance interests.

9. I'd have gankers pay a heavier price, just like the pirates of old - no place to hide, except in the wilderness.

10. My PvP goal in EVE is to not get my blood pressure up so high I require a ride to the ER.

11. Depends on the "type." Gankers are the lowest form of gamer. Professional military
handling security for corporate concerns - my heroes!

12. The most broken mechanic is gankers ganking miners with no noticeable
consequence from any "sovereign" authority.

13. (Thirteen questions is unlucky.) The most difficult aspect? Paying for it.

We must accommodate the idiocracy.

1) Are you Interested in PvP?
Yes.

2) If you are interested and have not participated in it, then why haven't you done so?
N/A

2) If you are interested then what is your motivation for PvP?
It's really fun going into massive fleets supported by even more massive fleets taking on hundreds of other people at a time.

4) If you are not interested why not?
N/A

5) If you are not interested in PvP is there ever a circumstance where you would be willing to shell out a large amount of risk for such protection? If so, what prevents you from doing so? Trustworthiness of mercenaries, limited contract system?
N/A

6) How many skipploints do you think it requires to be effective in PvP?
1v1 maybe about 1mill sp if you focused. If you have a nice little fleet you can easily just toss on some EWAR or tackle and be quite useflul in a fight.

7) What kind of ship do you think is the minimum to effectively PvP?
T1 frigate

8) What do you think is the most important facet of PvP in eve?
Fun

9) If you could have anything related to PvP within the current game mechanics, what would it be?
Some sort of short range scanner probe you can use at a jump gate similar to D-scan would be cool. and the probes could show up on the overview of anybody on the side of the gate the probes are at.

10) What would be your PvP goal in eve?
Large scale fleet battles. Also not dying all the time when on my own.

11) When it comes to PvPers in eve, what is your general opinion of them?
Eve was pretty much entirely revolves around PvP so you can't really complain about them. Just have fun.

12) What do you think is the most broken mechanic in PvP?
Going through a jump gate and finding about 10 fully T2 fitted ships of all kinds with bubbles everywhere with no way of knowing before going through.

13) When it comes to PvP in eve what is the most difficult aspect of it from your point of view?
For a new player... actually knowing how to fit a ship and what skills you should be training in the first place.

Its a fairly judgmental statement lacking any real backing in fact. Most PvPers I have met are adults with families, wives and children. I think its a mistake in general to judge people in real life by what they do in a video game.

My only issue with the opinion is I asked for no flames. She is entitled to believe whatever she wants.

1. Are you interested in PvP?
No.

2. If you are interested and have not participated in it, then why haven't you done so?
not applicable

3. If you are interested then what is your motivation for PvP?
not applicable

4. If you are not interested why not?
Interactions with players in the environment has never been of interest to me. I do not play EVE for player combat, I never have, and I never will. I play EVE for the environmental aspects, and players are simply a variable in which I always avoid.
In saying that, players add an immediate intensity to the task I am undertaking when they arrive on grid. A player entering local in Low or Null, or a gate-camp in which I jump into triggers a real sense of danger, which I suppose is part of the challenge, and makes it exciting in some way.

Summary: I'm always interested in other players, and the intel in which I can garner as to who they are and how they play, but I never enter a situation where I may encounter PvP through my actions or engage in PvP purposefully. I run away from almost all player encounters in the environment, unless in Highsec (in which case I simply observe the players actions very carefully).

Short Answer: Generally I play with keen social observation, but I don't engage in PvP

5. If you are not interested in PvP is there ever a circumstance where you would be willing to shell out a large amount of ISK for such protection? If so, what prevents you from doing so? Trustworthiness of mercenaries, limited contract system?
My ship and its crew are under my responsibility to be aware of the scenario I am about to encounter, and the dangers within the environment, as well as the capabilities of my ship to avoid the possible dangers within the scenario.

Answers to the question(s) at hand: No, not under my authority. I am a solo player, and that in itself should suffice for an answer.

6) How many skillpoints do you think it requires to be effective in PvP?
If you are specialising into one ship class (assuming small weapons, Faction/Tech I), around 5 million is all it takes to be very effective in most, if not all circumstances. With appropriate fittings, of course.
20 million SP will provide you with near perfect skills for a vast amount of PvP situations.

7. What kind of ship do you think is the minimum to effective in PvP?
It depends a large amount on the situation. Generally, the size of the ship class you are using is most effective against the same sized ship class.
-Pirating can be done with any ship that can use turrets or missiles.
-Small ship/low scale PvP can be done to some effect with Tech I's (depending on some circumstances)

I could probably extend this answer, however, the question isn't very well defined. Technically, a Rifter could be effective against a lone battlecruiser.

8. What do you think is the most important facet of PvP in EVE?
The psychological analysis of, and the prediction of actions by you to your opponent.
Knowing exactly how your opponent may react (or will lack reaction) can give you the upper-hand in many circumstances and grants you a plethora of options.

9. If you could have anything related to PvP within the current game mechanics, what would it be?
An AT ship. Oh wait.

10. What would be your PvP goal in EVE?
I have no such goal, but if I did, it would probably be along the lines of successfully fighting off players who may be attacking me during such environmental encounters.

11. When it comes to PvP players in EVE, what is your general opinion of them?
I see them as making up the majority of the player-base. I treat them like normal humans; generic, standard variables in the game. I treat them all as immensely dangerous hostiles, but I think of them as people; players; the good and friendly folks of EVE Online.

12. What do you think is the most broken mechanic in PvP?
Smartbomb Gate-camps. They give no fair opportunity to escape once you arrive in system. When planning routes they're completely avoidable, and quite easy to spot, but it's not balanced as it should be. Thus, broken.

Sovereignty, also, doesn't seem like a very accessible feature, as it seems to be more a massive lockdown by coalitions. But since I am not affiliated, concerned, nor affected by it in any way, I am not bothered by what happens to the process.

13. Finally. When it comes to PvP in EVE what is the most difficult aspect of it from your point of view?
As my point of view is that of one who scares from the thought of player combat, the most difficult aspect is one that is yet to come.
Scaring from battle is always going to require a large amount of concentration.

The five most difficult (and defining) aspects to overcome from my point of view:

Lock Speed | the defining factor in getting away.
Notoriety | being 'the hunted' is something I would consider to be mentally exhausting, and it means that you've always got to know exactly what's happening in order to survive.
Concentration | mastering the factors of survival means you need to be fully at tentative for the majority of the time.
Preparation | knowing the situation, knowing the environment, your ship, and other players; having readied the most effective method, and having practiced it many times.
Out-of-game factors | self-explainatory, the main factors being your computer hardware, your comfort when playing, any distractions that may occur when playing, and (the biggest bane, for me) internet stability and low-latency.

All aspects need to be accounted for in my opinion. Maybe not all the time, but when the situation requires it of you, most definitely.

That's my view, anyway.

After flying around with my 3 favorite people in EVE, I realized that if I was to have only one goal in EVE, it was to be to get so good at PVP that when I show up in Local, people will say "oh ****, it's her!" and clear out of the system.

Outside of that, I want to try every possible thing in the game.

Before I begin a little introduction.
I'm a 4 month explorer player with a 2,5 month PvP alt on the same account.
Since english is not my main language I'm sorry for any bad spelling or grammar.

----------------------------

1) Are you Interested in PvP?
Yes.

2) If you are interested and have not participated in it, then why haven't you done so?
Because I (Cataphrac) am a coward hinding behind standings to explore all New Eden without being hunted for police NPCs if I had gone FW.
Because I have a PvP alt on a holding corp in a null sec without a PvP mindset and since I already lost some ships while engaging hostiles and reported on intel channels about ship types and locations there is no x on chat, no CTA, no camps, no defensive roam gangs.
And this ANNOY me. I should just had joined FW and die, die, die, kill, die . . .

3) If you are interested then what is your motivation for PvP?
Killmail. And fight other PvPers.

6) How many skillpoints do you think it requires to be effective in PvP?
I think PvP is not a matter of skillpoints but if you have Propulsion Jamming III you're on the right path.

7) What kind of ship do you think is the minimum to effectively PvP?
A T1 frigate is enough.

8) What do you think is the most important facet of PvP in eve?
It reward your initiative and your knowledge of your enemy what I think is 80% of every fight.

9) If you could have anything related to PvP within the current game mechanics, what would it be?
Have the Cloaking concept changed for the Stealth concept.
A stealth ship is not invisible and can be locked at 2,5x of it normal lock time if it's on visual/overview range.
A stealth ship can be D-scanned but can't be probed.

10) What would be your PvP goal in eve?
Solo PvP. Because I like solo.

11) When it comes to PvPers in eve, what is your general opinion of them?
They are merciless, ruthless and unforgiven. What is very good.

12) What do you think is the most broken mechanic in PvP?
Aside Cloacking I think the idea of allow a cruiser hull deploy sentry is abit too much.
Only Battlecruiser/Battleships hulls should be allowed to use it and with a high bandwitch cost.
You are deploying a Sentry.

13) When it comes to PvP in eve what is the most difficult aspect of it from your point of view?
It's stupid but . . . GET OUT THERE AND KILL THAT #@!$%#$¨$$#%!

1) Are you Interested in PvP?
Yes

2) If you are interested and have not participated in it, then why haven't you done so?
n/a

2) If you are interested then what is your motivation for PvP?
Fun

4) If you are not interested why not?
n/a

5) If you are not interested in PvP is there ever a circumstance where you would be willing to shell out a large amount of risk for such protection? If so, what prevents you from doing so? Trustworthiness of mercenaries, limited contract system?
n/a

6) How many skipploints do you think it requires to be effective in PvP?
How many do you start with these days? You can effectively market, spy and / or awox PvP with them. A few more and you can hero tackle anything except a supercap. After 8-10 hours you can suicide gank effectively or do courier PvP. I'd guess to do mining PvP *effectively* you'd probably need to be in a decently tanked and skilled barge, so I guess that would take a while longer. I forget how many SP I had before I could do mission PvP effectively, but back then a drake was the mutt's nuts for it. Incursion PvP would likely take the most, primarily because of the elitist nature of many incursion groups who demand uber fits.

Also, "skipploints" should be a real word.

7) What kind of ship do you think is the minimum to effectively PvP?
Depends entirely on the type of PvP you want to do.

8) What do you think is the most important facet of PvP in eve?
Fun

9) If you could have anything related to PvP within the current game mechanics, what would it be?
I'll leave that to the experts.

10) What would be your PvP goal in eve?
One day I hope to rise to the level of vaguely semi-competent at it.

11) When it comes to PvPers in eve, what is your general opinion of them?
The entire Eve player base is a pretty large group to tar with one brush.

12) What do you think is the most broken mechanic in PvP?
Anything that highlights just how terribad I am at it.

13) When it comes to PvP in eve what is the most difficult aspect of it from your point of view?
Staying alive.

No, your rights end in optimal+2*falloff

5, Only mugs need protection.
6, it's not a SP issue it's a mind set issue. Seen good pvp'ers have 100mil+ and also sub 100k
7, Dependant on what you are trying to achieve.
8, As in any game "fun" what's the point otherwise?
9, Never thought about it.
10, I've blown up more than I have died so I have already achieved my goal.
11, No different to any other subset of the game.
12, off-grid boosting and drone assignment.
13, Nothing is actually that hard, if you have the right mind set and expect to die from the start anything else is a bonus.
