Is it just me, or do the new icons and color schemes suck?

I think the new UI looks great. Bit disappointed about the colour customisation, having only a few fixed palettes to choose from. Other than that look as a developer I can tell you that nomatter how good you make your UI look, people won't like it because it's changed.

After a few weeks they get used to the new one and forget they ever complained. Indeed if you then went back to the old one they'd hate it.

It's just a fact of life.

Not the case here. Nothing wrong with good change, but this was a series of backwards steps. For example the old icons weren't great but you had 2 ways to learn how to distinguish them (shape AND color), now it's just shape. On smaller screens it sucks because usually people size icons on the neo come to not take up much screen real estate, doing that now means a lot of squinting because you don't have different colors to act as a hint.

I was thinking more about the windowing than the icons. The icons definitely need colour cues though.

I too think the windowing is fine.

And WE ALL agree on the point that the icons DO NEED colours.

CCP felt the old ones where, old. 11 year old and needed a fix/update.

Just sad they went back into 1980's with this design and not into 2014 and beyond.

Then again, current designs for buttons and interfaces in os's etc. seem to be all about flatness, 3D icons are passé it seemsStraight.

I feel as though I'm in the minority here, but that's hardly unusual.

I'm fine with the new icons. They're clean and functional at high resolution. The old ones were just messy and non-intuitive even for old players.

Ditto for the new UI. It needs a few tweeks, as do most newly introduced changes, but I find it much more usable and visually appealing than the old one.

In any case, it's here now and in a week it will be a non issue. Just like when the undock button was moved and everyone screamed bloody murder about it.

Seriously, Cribba's suggestion fixes most of my problems with the UI, can I get a tickbox to use the colors he posted on the icons?

Really? So you found the icons you looked at for years easier to identify with your peripheral vision than the new ones you've only looked at for a few hours? This is just muscle memory, we've been staring at those icons forever. The new ones have barely been live for 24 hours.

The PI icon is almost exactly the same, but monochrome. The wallet icon is much easier to see and identify now, peripherally or otherwise. The Inventory icon has been simplified, and looks like the inventory icon from Minecraft.

I didn't look at Chribba's pic, and I'm not opposed to some color being present, but the vector look is much cleaner and easier to parse at a glance. Give it a few days to adjust.

You're not understanding what Eraza is saying. It's nto muscle memory, it's a fact that human eyes can discern colors via peripheral vision. This new monochrome BS forces you to look directly at an icon to 'see' it. I haven't rearranged the icons on my neo-com for ages, if it were a matter of muscle memory i'd just go straight to the same location i used to. But without the que you get from something having a color, i'm forced to turn my head to make sure.

This is VERY bad in a fast moving situation (like being in an epic arc and trying to balance your cap vs your shield boosting and wanting to click on the journal to check out the objectives, and that's just a pve example).

CCP is probably the only company I've patronized that introduces things that offer less useability and functionality than the previous iteration of the same thing and calls it 'progress'. Ok, not the only company, there is of course Microsoft doing the same thing lol.

Chribba's simple paintjob fix would 100% fix the issue if you took the time to actually look at it before posting about it.

Took a couple hours to get used to the new icons, but I really like Chribba's suggestion on the colors.

As for the color schemes in general, I don't like not having control over the colors of the UI. While it doesn't affect me personally, I suspect that the new UI might be an issue for some players who deal with being color blind. Though there do seem to be some contrasting choices (i.e. Nebula).

Profit favors the prepared

The lack of color was a conscious choice. https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&m=5187521#post5187628

I don't know why they think a lack of color helps people, especially those of us over 40 who are starting to experience small natural eyesight changes.

They made it sound as if it was to help people identify the icons better, but lack of color does the opposite of that. And actually they did it because the code is simpler with one universal color rather than each icon having its own little palette. It doesn't help us, it just helps them.

It's impossible to colourise non-greyscale icons according to user preferences, or very complicated. So your starting point for icons that change colour is to just make them an alpha channel with no RGB at all. Then you can given them whatever colour you want at runtime on the fly by multiplying the alpha value with an actual colour, i.e. you don't have to have baked the colours into them and into the .exe. So I expect that's why they did it. In future they will be able to make the icon any colour you want.
