Hi,

Today AMD released the much anticipated Catalyst Omega driver. One of the features is something called VSR which stands for Virtual Super Resolution. It allows you to render a game up to 4k but display it on a 1080p monitor. It simulates Super Sampeling Anti-Aliasing for games that do not support it. It is an option for R9 290 series and R9 285 Gpus.

The most common use for this would be rendering a game at, say, 3,840x2,160 (4K) and resizing it to fit on a 1,920x1,080 (1080p) display. The resolution displayed is technically identical, but the downsampling process provides better image accuracy.

Should this in theory work with EVE, or will it screw up text you think? Is there any point to it?

If anyone tries it please post results and experience here.

_edit-

Well I installed the driver but no idea how to setup the 4k up-scaling down-sampling thing??

Well I worked out how to to it, so i went into CCC and switched Advanced mode on. Then clicked on 'My Digital Flat Panels', then ticked 'Enable Virtual Super Resolution', then changed desk top resolution from 1920x1200 to 256 x1600, then opened up EVE and chose the 2560x1600 option and was underwhelmed.

The game looked about the same but text and all windows were smaller/blurry. I went from a constant 60fps down to 30fps..

Do not waste your time.

what did you expect exactly? The super sampled resolution you picked requires double the processing power and its usually found at 30" monitors. No wonder the text was too small for your (24" I assume?) 1080p monitor. VSR is good for older games and PCs with enough processing power.

Cramming 4 times the desktop space into a smaller area. I imagine compromises have to be made.

And here I am still playing EVE on my Magic Chef microwave oven from 1992...
