? about PI cycle weirdness

I'm taking my first serious stab at PI right now, but something weird keeps happening when I try and program a basic factory.

I set up my extractors and my runtime such that the 'output' figures tell me I should be bringing in enough material to keep a factory running the whole cycle, and I run it. The weirdness is that when I go back to the ECU menu - even if I check on it directly after starting a program - the total output for the cycle has fallen, and I no longer have enough materials to keep my factory running the whole time. What gives? And how can I compensate for this? I'm attempting to run long (7 day) cycles, could this have something to do with it?

Sorry if this is a copy-post, I did try to research this on my own but I couldn't find any other mention of this problem.

Heard mention of that here

Not had the chance to have a look ingame though.

/edit also IIRC some buildings cycle at 1 hour some at 30 mins maybe thats the confusion

I had a similar issue. What I realized is I was looking at the out put per hour. This is an average. Extraction is top heavy, you will extract more at the beginning of your plan then at the end. When you set it up the out put per hour is for the entire project, as the project runs it changes to what is left to run. So inevitably the output per hour will drop of the course of the program, but the true average of per hour will be what what stated at the beginning.

When you are busy setting up an extractor program the values shown are esimates (before you hit the install program button). The actual values aren't always lower I've had some cases where the actual was as much as 1.5 times what was estimated while I was setting up. The only way to get the exact values is to install the program then open the survey window again.

Note that hitting the install program button doesn't actually start anything so you can stop and install multiple configurations to get the values you want before you actually start the program by hitting submit.

You can increase the accuracy of the survey estimates by training up planetology and advanced planetology. Many people including myself consider these skills to be pretty useless as the extra effort needed to get a 100% accurate result on what an extractor program will do before you start it is minimal.

Planetology is useful for decicding which planet to settle and locating hotspots so you can drop your command centre in the right place. Not useful once you've settled a colony but certainly not useless.
