Here is what I want:

A way to run a match without CCP involvement. Choose your point systems, lock in your pilots, go. And the ability to stream said match with a couple commentator slots.

Why:

Because then we can run a weekend / monthly thing like the SCL. The NEO and the AT is not enough. Giving the players the tools to grow the player and streaming base will reap benefits.

There are many people of frankly low intelligence that would argue that giving players these tools would make all of EVE disappear and suddenly everyone would be playing the instant gratification elements of the game. It is guaranteed risk, on average more than half the ships that go into the arena are not there 10 minutes later. (for the risk-adverse we want to ruin your game experience types).

What would happen would be that a tournament scene would draw in people interested in aspects of EVE which already exist. And this may appeal to a completely new type of player who will come in through that door, and then spend some time in the general population of EVE trying out other aspects of the game.

To be honest I am writing this with the expectation that CCP is not going to put any time into this or even thinks it is a good idea. It pisses me off to no end that a game company wouldn't even give a very rudimentary match start interface to make everything way more cool. I guess the haters of tournaments voices are way louder than the voices of the people looking to just have some fun in a game.

You might want to look at the RvB spring cup and the Tyrian cup. Mangala wrote a nice article about it:

It is possible to set up a tournament with the current tools available. There might be some small things that would make life easier for people organising a tournament, but it is far from impossible.

Good luck with setting up a tournament!

It is impossible to run a tournament which includes very serious competitors without morals.

There has to be a machine enforcing the rules or you will get podding, illegal implants, sketchy fits, "no I wasn't out of bounds", point miscalculations, and pre-locking.

I would go so far as to say there are 0 tools available to run a serious tournament.

Give it a try and see how much fun it is. It sucks donkey cahones.

And just out of curiosity, WHAT TOOLS are you referring to?

I don't think he said it was impossible.

You can roleplay tournaments right now. Even with players playing by the rules you can't enforce boundary violations, match start/end, tidi, etc. with enough accuracy for it to be reliable.

It also takes more effort to put on your own "tournament" matches than doing the matches in AT/NEO. You also have to contend with potential outside interference as well.

There are hard coded tools to support a variety of play styles.

There are none for tournaments unless CCP is involved.

Having access to a spectator interface goes a long way to helping people watching understand what is going on, allows the tournaments to be more of a spectator sport. It also allows commentators to understand and commentate which can improve viewer experience.

I think the main frustration for a lot of tournament players is that they feel disenfranchised by CCP. Sure there is the AT and NEO (if they announce it) but it is something devs have to do on their free time and there is a lack of effort being put into providing some sort of support for that community.

There are dozens of ideas and visions that have some merit and are appealing, the issue is that (to my knowledge) there is no indication from CCP that they are interested, outside a few select devs, in pursuing any of them.

Apparently EVE is an "esport" in china (or at the very least took part in a "professional esport league" NOT run by CCP/Tiancity). The Alliance Tournament gets thousands of views when streaming, it gives the game more exposure. If you give players/organizations the tools to do it, it becomes free advertising for CCP.

EVE has an extremely unique combat system (3D yo) with a set of challenges that don't exist in other games. I think it will hook a lot of people who come try it. Our tournament practices are run all year because we actually enjoy it enough to slog through the organization of it every weekend.

Running a tournament is not impossible with what we have now, but it is lipstick on a pig. You need to have a bunch of fairly well-mannered people to pull it off. If someone wants to be a **** they can effectively stop any player run tournament.

Everyone experiences EVE much the same as everyone experiences life. What different people see / like / do and the paths they take through it are completely different. There are those that live for the tournaments, others enjoy mining and fuelling POSs. Why? I don't know.

But they are all part of the same game. Those ships that blow up in the arena need to be manufactured, the pilots need to be trained. So what if the player primarily does tournaments? With tournaments come affiliations with in-game corps and alliances that do tournaments. Roaming is another element, DUST 514, Legion. It is a gateway, a marketing tool.

Basically it is this: Give players the tools to run matches. Give them the means to stream it using observers. Then back off and watch what happens. If it doesn't "work" you have at least given the AT crew a good way to run their tournaments. If it "works" you have an e-sports platform to showcase, and hopefully the Tuesday Night Bowling leagues that develop will organize into something substantial.

There are those that believe that EVE should not contain Indycar, NASCAR, or F1.

They believe that all gameplay should be like GTA5 with no other options than getting carjacked.

EVE is real yo.
