Hi! I'm fairly new to eve, i started playing a week ago and loved it!
I started playing minmatar, but i got curious about the other ships and tried all the other factions frigates. Even though i loved to pewpew lazor infinite ammo, i decided to stay with minmatar since i heard that lasers are kinda "meh" for PVE (security missions), and minmitar are the most versatile.

I started mining and made 30 million aprox. After that i bought a thrasher to start doing some security missions (and fitted it poorly with some artillery mixed with autocannons for PVE, since i still have tons of skills to train xD).
The problem comes when i tried my first Level 2 mission. I warped in and 5 npc ships spammed missiles on me from 20+ km (without me even touching them) and barelly made it out alive.

This "event" made me think about getting a new ship to PVE into higher rank missions (or learning to fit my destroyer correctly?).
I had planned buying a Stabber/Rupture, but people say that a battlecruiser will make things easier and i'll be able to make more income.

What do you veterans think? Which way should a novice minmatar take to succeed in pve?

Thanks in advance!! Big smile

Thrasher isn't great at missioning as some of the other destroyers out there.

I can see a few flaws in your tactics from your post and I'll try and help you rectify them:

1. Don't mix gun types, either use artillery or autocannons. Rule of thumb in eve is that if you try and fit something to do everything, it will be crap at everything.

2. It doesn't sound like you have any kind of tank on your thrasher, you want to try and fit some kind of hp regeneration on it. A small shield booster would work.

3. Fit an afterburner, when you're smaller ships like a destroyer a lot of your damage mitigation is with speed. Missiles do less damage to something running an afterburner because the target outruns the explosions (kind of) and guns have a harder time hitting you.

I would definitely not go for a battlecruiser as of yet, a rupture can easily take care of level 2 missions with a proper fit.

Do some lvl 1 missions with your Thrasher so you learn the concepts and effects of tracking and kiting.

Maybe something like this? Adapt to your skills as needed, it should let you run the booster for a couple of minutes, and get you used to moving your ship, managing your cap, choosing ammunition based upon your opponent, and, if you want, you can replace the invuln with a rat-specific hardener, even a passive one if you need more cap.

Gyrostabilizer I

1MN Afterburner I
Small Shield Booster I
Adaptive Invulnerability Field I

The Thrasher really scales well with your skills. Enjoy!

IMO for 2's as a new player, your prolly going to have an easier time with a larger ship. Rupture, Stabber, Hurricane, all will work. I'd almost suggest going hurricane cause if you mess up you could jump drive or what have you + you can use the hurricane for 3's

Just remember that if small targets like frigates get in close when ur using medium guns, you may to have some difficulty hitting them. make sure you have some way to deal with that, such as drone skills.

Thanks for the replys! I'll try some of those fits!

I tried to kite, use AB, artillery and it's the thing that works best, since i can warp in, burst one or two ships down and get out. But the thrasher cannot be fully filled with artillery since i run out of CPU.

I'm scared of going in fully autocannon against missile cruisers, since the moment i get in range to shoot i'm probably gonna be half dead by missile rats to really do anything.

I guess the safest choice would be to upgrade my ship to one that can kite them out of missile range, since i can't seem to tank without running out of capacitor or snipe out of range :s

So eve is new to you and your trying to do the normal game thing and get better faster and get to do more and earn more gold/isk faster. The problem you are going to encounter is that eve is set up to prevent you from going to far too fast. Simply the training Q takes time and you probably don't have the skills or skill books yet to do much effectively.

1) you really should do the complete tutorial, it gives you lots of ships, isk and teaches you the basics.

2)Once your done with ALL the tutorials you should go and look at all the skills and attributes you need. Basically welcome to the learning cliff, eve is not a normal game you buy in 2014. Its not like any game that you can just pick up and figure out the basics in an hour of playing around at level 1. It takes hours of reading to start understanding the basics. Can you have fun flying your ship? sure but it blowing up because you fit a kinetic resistant mod instead of a EM against sansha is a hard death for a new pilot to understand. Never give up!

3) ingame their is a channel button on the left, choose the help channel of your language and ask questions.

1. Eve University. I can't recommend them highly enough. Even if you don't join, use their Wiki to learn about overview setup, ship setup, mission-running basics, and many, many other things.

2. Eve-survival.org - this website will describe each mission in detail, recommend a ship model or type to successfully complete it, recommend a damage type to deal, and tell you the primary damage type to tank against.

3. Use the fit I posted above in level 1 missions only. Level 2's will chew it up. Get used to maneuvering next to an opponent. Kiting works well, but it's not always an option.

4. If you're running out of CPU or powergrid, that should tell you what you need to train up. The Engineering skill tree will, and should, be your friend for a while. I recommend the Navigation tree after that. Speed and maneuverability never go out of style.

5. Yes, you're going to have to wait. Just because you can sit in a ship doesn't mean you should fly that ship. Run those level 1 missions a bit longer, at least until you can fit your Thrasher with a full rack of artillery. Move up to level 2 missions only when you can fit your Rupture, Stabber (not really recommended as a mission runner, but a superb kiting ship - YMMV), or Bellicose (an often overlooked ship that is surprisingly capable in many roles) PROPERLY. This means that you can fully fit all of the modules needed for both offense and defense, and a full flight of drones. Level 3 missions are going to drag on, but you need to be able to fully T2 tank your battlecruiser before moving on to level 4's, and a battleship. You can get away with T1 guns/launchers in a BS, but not having a T2 tank can be a lethal mistake in some missions.
