As one of the apparently rare one monitor users, this looks like the first step to pure awesomeness. I love the focus on UI changes (its my main pain point with Eve, the currently UX challenged UI, I want to watch the beautiful environment, not 1000 windows), but I see constant small and now big improvements. This is really really great.

The new 3D map looks nice. I really like the seamless zooming in/out between solar system map and universe map.

But for me personally, the 3D map is of little interest. I often plan longer routes and for that i need a 2D map with lots of statistics on sec status, jump counts etc and most importantly, it must be easy to read. So i'll stick with dotlan for now and wait for your version of a 2D map.

Some things i'd like to be implemented in the 2D map:

- Seamless zooming in/out between universe map and solar system map
- Setting multiple filters at once in the universe map (e.g. show sec status, jump count and kills in last hour). The values should be displayed as numbers, not just a colour indicating a low/high value. And after setting the filters, the results should be clearly visible on every system without having to click, right-click or hover over a specific system first. Basically just like dotlan, only with multiple filters.
- Solar system search function with multiple filters. (e.g. highlight systems with A: station count>0, B: ice belts>0, B: region=forge)
- Ability to save routes

Not specifically about the 2D map, but hey, while i'm at it:
- Ability to drag and drop bookmarks into messages/chat to easily share bookmarks with other players.

Cool stuff I could use:

  • Ability to add labels to systems arbitrarily and name them.
  • Ability to save long waypoint mapped routes from my autopilot and load them again when I need them.
  • Extra overlay for sov status. For instance, being able to view stars colored by sec status with a sov overlay at the same time.

Signatures should be used responsibly...

Maybe I don't notice this on the current system map, but an arrow that points in the direction you are looking in space.

I'm probably doing it wrong currently though.

Yaay!!!!

I would love if this became my primary mode of navigation.

- Label my home system and jump clones
- Label where I have assets stored
- Label important stations and starbases (corp offices, trade centers, mission hubs)
- Label where my mission is
- Label where my expeditions are going

Well... let me label whatever systems I like, however I like with a set of icons of my choosing. (Plus automatically add mission and expedition stuff).

It'd be so much easier than typing in a system name, auto link, and set waypoint.

A galactic map scale bookmarks visible on the map. I like it.

can you confirm this can be dragged out to a 2nd monitor as it states, or will I need the eve client to stretch over both screens?

Yes, same window as eve, you would need to stretch the eve window to two monitors.

You have to stretch it to 2 monitors.

Not having to do this would be a great improvement for the map, the overview, chat windows, and a great many other windows.

Yes, eventually we hope to remove it since the new map should better cover the same functions.

umm dont remove that, its best use is to use the directional scanner telling which direction someone is with out using scanner probes to bust safespots.... really i would only need the system 1

tells u how wide ur angle is by visuals and what direction your facing
u can take out the universe region and constellation

now if you made a 3d version of that showing the projection of the range and degree of view that your dscan is using and ship is facing then u can take that away

Going to second the question if CCP investigated the possibility of a multi-window option for those of us with monitor setups that aren't "stretch friendly"

in my case because of space restrictions I actually have my second screen above my primary (of a different resolution, no less), and since I'm an explorer by trade in eve I don't think dotlan ever leaves my secondary screen while I'm playing.

some folks also have graphics hardware or multi-monitor setups that don't play at all nicely with stretched windows, either due to driver issues or screens of differing resolutions, which makes spanning multiple monitors impossible.

I'll use my case as an example: I have a 24" 1920x1200 main monitor, with a 1650x1080 22" secondary. if I try to span across multiple windows, I am limited to the maximum vertical resolution of 1080px across both monitors, otherwise I would lose the edges of the window off the screen. in a theoretical multi-window setup, I can set the star map window to the native resolution and graphics port of my second monitor, and display it as a fixed window on that second monitor with no issue (in the way you already can when running 2 eve clients at once)

Idea this could also be used to provide not just a star map, but a place to put all manner of information windows, like people & places, inventories, market windows. all the stuff we'd love to leave open but need to see the game properly to play.

If they added an overlay to the system map that showed a 3d cone kind of like a probe bubble based on the degree and range of your D-scan and the direction your camera is pointing that you could set to hide/show from the d-scan window that would be awesome.

CCP doing it right. Now enable seamlessly scrolling back from your ship's guns via the grid and the system map to the universe map, and i'll be forever immersed in EVE. (But make it toggleable, so you don't see the entire universe every time you just wanted to see the whole grid. Like Ctrl+Scroll)

tl;dr - my fears were unfounded and I'm really liking the direction eve is taking with all the UI changes including this very freaking nice map update. Even if you only live up to half of your desired functionality in the future, it'll still be pretty amazing.

My initial reactions (while i'm patching my sisi client) are that we've heard the talk about a "seamless map transition" before, and that was a not-so-clever "misuse" of the language. Also, The dev blog made it seem like the new map wouldn't have the "flattened" mode that I've used since beta. I do love the 3d map, don't get me wrong, I just find the most use from the flattened map. Not in a 51% of the time kind of "most", but more of a 99% of the time most.

.... sisi patched FAR faster than I thought it would.

You don't call it flattened mode now, you call it "abstract mode" and I can see why. It's still a 3d map that you can rotate in any direction, but you've put all the regions/systems on a flat plane. VERY FREAKING NICE. Unfortunately, I spawned in a WH system without realizing it, so I took like 3 minutes wondering how to find myself before I saw the problem. Once I used the moveme bot and re-opened the map, woooooooooooooooooooooooooooow. Very nice.

And to my first concern about "seamless map transition" you're 2/3 of the way there now. But I think maybe my expectation of being able to just scroll my mouse wheel out til my ship is a tiny dot, then keep scrolling to get to the system view, then keep scrolling to get to the universe view is a little unreasonable. Maybe. A guy can dream, right?

end

p.s. can we start up another petition to open the damn door again? I want to play the strategy game they told us was working! I want to see other characters walk around and sit at a table when I'm talking to them in a chat window. I understand it adds zero functionality/choice/mechanics to the game, but I don't care. A guy can dream about that too, right?

Agreed. I'm running 3x 1200p monitors (Dell U2412M), and Eve doesn't let me just use 2 of them.

Across all three screens, 5760x1200, the FOV becomes ludicrously compressed i.e. aking to viewing the game through a thin slit. You only see a tiny slice of the vertical plane, and with everything being so big due to this it's nearly impossible to maintain situational awareness. If you zoom out enough to see a station, you can no longer see your ship etc.

As a result I'm confined to just using 1x screen, which alas is too low resolution I feel to properly see space & windows. Thus I'm now saving for the new Dell U3415W.

If the devs could have a look at adjustable [vertical] FOV for multi monitor users then that'd be absolutely awesome.

But I digress.

The new maps look awesome. I was super excited to see the map in a window and yelled out my delight the second CCP Rise previewed that at the EDU. :)

Okay, legit feedback after playing around with the map for a bit:

1. There's no hover text. I should be able to see the information I've selected in my filter in some way other than a colored dot. I imagine this is in the works, because it is one of the most useful features of the current F10 map.

2. I'd like there to be some sort of button/toggle so that when I'm in abstract mode, I can't rotate the map at all. Or a button to re-orient the map to its default orientation.

3. The "You are here" target is great, but kind of hard to see. White triangle, white icon, white region names... it all kind of blends together. Same for the "home" icon.

4. When opening a sub-menu in the star color-wheel, especially the lower ones, I shouldn't have to scroll the mouse to see the options I just said I wanted to look at. Either the dropdown should be extended or it should automatically scroll to show those options when you click the group (statistics, my information, industry, etc).

5. It would be nice to have a hotkey, or another button somewhere, to quickly re-center the map on where you are, or on your home, or on your "selected" system.

6. Every time you turn on "abstract mode" the map zooms all the way out.

7. There's no way to have the map "follow" or "stay centered" on your ship as you warp around a system.

8. Planets/moons/BOOKMARKS/etc aren't displayed on the map. You can't right click on the sun to warp to it. I do like how you can dock at a station or jump through a gate from the map view.

9. You can't just zoom in on various system names to see the system contents, you have to actually click on the system name. Doing this prevents you from seeing the system contents of the one you were just looking at a moment ago.

10. The autopilot line doesn't extend all the way to a station if that is your destination, just to the incoming gate of the final system.

11. There's no way to click on some system names to see their contents because another label is covering the system name label. For example, Amarr. The label "Amarr Home Worlds" is covering up the system name of "Amarr". The only way I can see the solar system view of Amarr is by clicking on the "home" icon I have set there. I imagine this happens in other cases too.

12. The "Floating Mode" is like a window, but it doesn't act like any of the other windows in eve in one respect. There's no title bar to double click on to minimize the window to just a bar like you can with all the others. My only options are to close the window or drag it manually to the bottom of the screen to get it out of the way if I need to see my actual ship view in a hurry.

13. While in "Floating Mode", The only way to make the map be on top of every other window, is to click the pseudo-title bar. Otherwise, all your manipulation of the map occurs underneath your other windows. Upon further consideration, I like this default behavior, but I think you should be able to toggle if you want the window to always be on top or always be under, or something along those lines.

14. If you turn off abstract mode, while zoomed in on a random system, the map centers itself to some random place in the middle of nowhere. So you have to find the place you were looking at before, all over again. It should stay centered on whatever system/region/item you had selected before you toggled the abstract mode. Going from non-abstract to abstract works as expected; the centering remains fixed on your current selection.

I know that was quite a bit of criticism, and more than a fair share of personal preference complaints in there, but I believe all of these were valid feedback points that should be considered by the managing team.

Despite all of these issues, I really really really REALLY love this new map, and I hope you're able to devote the time and resources it deserves to make it as awesome as we all know it can be. THANK YOU for another great UI improvement.

^This

Also I find the lack of unstack on hover disturbing. The amount of systems with multiple belts, stations and other things close together should warrant the hover unstack we currently have with brackets in space right now so you don't spend ten minutes click the same stack of icons just to get the one you wanted.

But overall, I love the new map, it's in line with all the other UI changes and looks amazing.

I've always wanted a tactical map that was specific to my location (or any location I specify). That is:

The system I am in is in the map center.
All the other systems are arranged in rings about the center.
On a ring just outside of the map enter are all the systems one jump from me.
On the next ring out are all the systems that are two jumps out.

And so on.

Obviously, this map would be specific to each system, and would have to be procedurally generated.

Pretty much every window in the game that has a close button has its close button in the top-right corner.

Please, move the close button for the new map (in windowed mode) to the top-right, too. I keep finding myself hovering in that direction when trying to close it, then realizing after a second it isn't there.

I'm confused (not really, more like sarcastic) we were told that dull, lifeless, monochromatic images were moar efficient for the human brain to quickly function with. With all this beautiful color, are we going to be nurf'ed in our ability to select stars and systems ?
