As a 0.0 resident I can tell you that in practice Caldari ships and missiles are not used very often in fleet pvp. For pvp in general either Minmatar or Amarr are the way to go. My alliance currently makes, with the exception of the Vulture for fleet bonus, no use of Caldari ships in any fleet and the only caldari ship that you encounter in 0.0 fleets is the Drake.

Missiles = Delayed damage.

That being said, it doesnt mean you wont be good at PvP using a Caldari set up. PvP is a learned art.

Train, have missiles, enjoy them.

Get a Falcon, be hated by your enemies, watch them explode, laugh.

Falcons, look em up if you dont know what they do, they will make your Caldari heart squeal.

You can take heart in that most 0.0 Alliances are not exactly at the cutting edge of fleet doctrine as it takes a while to get folks to train into something new and give the FC's time to practice with it.

From what I have read, PL is making use of Sniper Rokhes, and depending on how well they do you could be lined up for the next Flavor of the month as caldari.

EDIT:

I wouldn't recommend chasing flavor of the month ships and weapon systems before you are in a Corp. If you focus on being useful in a specific race first, you can always be helpful while training up to the current fleet flavor with a future corp.

Else, you can very well find yourself being able to fly the fleet doctrine that just went out of style.

As an empire space resident I add to this that in practice 2x+ numerical advantage gangs of 0.0 residents regularly run from or dock up in fear of small drake gangs brought to their doorstep. The 'fleet pvp' described here must be about as fun as the current mining mechanic (arguably it might become more interesting with time dilation? but i digress). And regarding the Drake being like the only ship, Caracal gangs have worked; hell, even Osprey gangs have worked.

just as a warning, what they do is about as moral as setting a bomb inside a puppy asylum.

My entire point is that the entire 'flavour of the month' craze shouldn't dictate your training if you plan to stick with eve, as all races are perfectly viable for most things, including most PVP combat. And if you end up training certain skills not because you want to (e.g to fly something new, to be more effective etc) but because a corp tells you to, maybe it's just a bad, inflexible corp?

i just locked an open door.. strange, yet symbolically compelling.

Just train up your armor skills a bit and pile into a plated scorpion or a throw-away blackbird whenever the missile dps and shield tanked caldari ships you can fly aren't called for.

I did this for years and never felt unwanted, although I have to say, the moment I was pegged as a regular scorp pilot by enemy fc's I got primaried much more often. Evil

Missiles can work fine in certain PVP scenarios. The obvious Drake for soloing or fleet PVP, Tengu same thing and apart from those some of the missile frigates are very good. Thing is that they tend to need "weird" fits to make it happen and also require an understanding of how dps is applied in regards to falloff when fighting turret ships and how you can make that work FOR you. The problem is that most people aren't realising this and are incapable of thinking up strategies, so they will just make it easy on themselves and state that "missiles suck".

Having said that; you give yourself way more options by switching to Winmatar just like everyone else but that doesn't mean you HAVE to.

There are plenty of viable fits for caldari ships outside of the cloud of supertanked drakes that are fielded so often. The nano drake, HAM drake, nano navy caracal, to name a few are some pretty nasty fits in pvp.

The Drake is the number 1 ship when it comes to number kills:

The numbers are biased tho, as most of these kills are done in large-ish 0.0 fleets. The ranking would be different if you looked at solo or small gang kills.

Caladri works well in pvp, you just have to use the right ships and fittings.

^^ This to be honest ^^

Fly what you enjoy & don't get pulled into the "FOTM" brigade. Seen many a person do this & their skills are a horrendous mess!!

Back on topic, Are Caldari any good?

Yes, if you know how to fit them & have the support skills to back up the fits. Remember, there is no wrong or right way to fit a ship.
There's an optimal fit (or two or three), the usual "Everyone fit theirs the same", and then the ones that fit "outside the norm".

It's the latter ones that you wont find posted about but usually wreak the most havoc on the field Twisted

So it's pretty much a case with go with what "YOU" want. If you find you don't like that race of ships, train up another race Cool

A properly skilled pilot is usually much better than one who has only levelled up a few skills and swaps out to something else before getting the most out of their ship.

Remember, Eve is a sandbox where pretty much anything goes so Enjoy the Ride Cool

Fly what you want and remember if you fly ECM Caldari everyone will hate you.

I fly Gallantee (was that laughter i heard at the back of the room?) and have fun and my ALT is a Caldari ECM pilot and i always get a spot in a fleet (But then again the corp my Alt flys with is awsome that way.)

When i first started i had a blinkered fly Gallantee outlook, but with time you will fly diiferent races etc.

Anyway have fun

Don't worry the Drake is pretty well set for 0.0. Almost every big Alliance does Drake Fleets and Nano Drake Fits often role in small gangs. The Ship is so well used that well...Here are the top 20 killers in EVE.

1 Drake 122048
2 Hurricane 68511
3 Abaddon 43118
4 Tengu 30829
5 Maelstrom 27055
6 Tornado 24915
7 Armageddon 21107
8 Scimitar 17881
9 Tempest 17786
10 Sabre 15242
11 Cynabal 14316
12 Thrasher 13076
13 Vagabond 12076
14 Huginn 12028
15 Rokh 11113
16 Loki 11036
17 Rapier 10924
18 Hound 10810
19 Zealot 10734
20 Oracle 10544

I would say a good Drake will have you set for small gangs and fleets. Look into the Hurricane for Skirmish Fleets and the Arty Maelstrom and T2 Pulse Laser Abbadons as other good future options. These ships get into a lot of fleets.
