The Adventures Of Falcon - Starting EVE From Scratch

So, I decided to partake in a little project.

As part of my job I hear a lot about how EVE is too difficult as a rookie, and how new players can't compete with veterans because of the skillpoint gap.

This is a common misconception among people who've never played EVE before and who just listen to the stereotype. I'd like to make an attempt to break that stereotype and show both new players and potential new players alike that starting EVE today is a good as time as ever.

With that in mind, after 12 years I'm putting all my veteran characters on ice until further notice, and will no longer be playing them.

These are characters who in some instances have >200 million skillpoints and multiple billions of ISK in their wallets. I've set their skill queues for a few years, (thanks for that functionality, guys! xD) and that's that. They're now no longer my concern.

So, it's back to the start. I've created a new character. He has 55,824 skillpoints and 5,000 ISK in his wallet.

That's all I get to start out with, same as any other rookie. I figure that all the knowledge of EVE that I have as a player is available out there in the form of guides, wikis and player resources, so I'm pretty much on even footing.

Hell, maybe I'll even learn a thing or two along the way.

Starting this evening at 19:00 UTC, my twitch channel will go live and I'll start from scratch, to see how far I can go in EVE.

This new character will start training when the stream goes live for the first time and I will begin my journey in EVE from the beginning.

No hiding character names, no secrets, the community will know who I am and what I do, and will be able to interact with me in any way they see fit, whether that be to assist, or hinder.

I'll be regularly streaming the shenanigans that I get up to, regularly taking part in whatever events I can when I have time, and seeing how much fun I can have as a rookie again.

It's quite an exciting prospect, and if you'd like to join me on this journey, then you can tune in to my Twitch channel.

I'll also be announcing on twitter every time I go live with a stream, and I'll be streaming pretty much all the gameplay I experience.

Come join me for some fun!

Big smile

I think this is a cool idea! Will you only be streaming in your own free time? I wouldn't mind watching a few sessions live, so any chance you'll sneak in a couple of hours here and there early during your work day (which aligns nicely with AUTZ evenings)?

Sure, I'll be streaming at all hours, depending on when I'm playing. Big smile

Hey Falcon, I'll definitely be tuning in if I'm home.

I did mention on twitter though that "starting fresh" to see the new player view may be difficult since you still have 12 years of game experience. It's easy to see beginnings when you know what awaits.

Have you considered sponsoring a new player? Someone you know that doesn't play? Having a fresh set of eyes will be more telling than a jaded vet starting over.

Regardless, I'll be looking forward to seeing the project roll. Good luck to you, sir. o7

I wonder how many people will be waiting in catalysts to 'greet you' when you leave the rookie systems.Pirate

I for one support this and can't wait to see the hilarity Falcon gets up to. He is probably the most entertaining person I regularly have meetings with thanks to his mix of curmudgeon and comedian. And the dude LOVES EVE. Srsly.

I've been trying out my own streaming at www.twitch.tv/ccp_manifest and started out a brand new character as well to run through the new player experience, offer advice and hang out.

Streaming is fun, why did nobody tell me this :)?

Please do keep us abreast on what you experience as a new player. I'd like to see what additional ideas you/the rest of the dev team come up with to screw over veteran and other long-term invested players.

To chime in, I knew of this, but not the part where the char name would be showing. Let's see how it goes, but I wouldn't get too attached to that character. I also fail to see how this would resemble a new player's experience, since I doubt you'll get the same reception as a real noob.

Mh...
As an employee of CCP you are not allowed to join a player corporation (at least that's what I heard) - will there be a change to this policy (for your project) as the trailer showed us the importance of player groups?
If not - this project will be interesting in showing how to live the life of a lone wolf.

For sure you'll be threatened not like other "real new players" - I'm unsure wheter you should go incognito or not.
But maybe that would suit CCP Rise or CCP Fozzie better.

Let's see what kind of impact you'll have on market speculations...

Only problem is that you are not as confused as an new player .. the knowlege in your head is more worth then anything ;)

But maybe coming with some other dudes from RvB to .. don't know yet ... But the biggest thing as an newbie is to wrap your brain around eve ;) my girl quit because it was to much info at the first start

I've got a good idea, maybe send him a PRIVATE MESSAGE or also potentially WALK A FEW FEET DOWN THE HALL AND TALK TO HIM IN PERSON instead of attempting to neuter him in public after he starts doing something a lot of EVE vets have been clamoring for for ages?

Having Devs playing this game in the open with full disclosure is not a bad thing for the game, it's a very good thing and should be fully supported by CCP.
