Anyone else having problems with Crucible?

I'm on Ubuntu 10.04, core 2 duo, nvidia 9500, and I'm unable to play. Anyone else having this problem?

I'm able to login, pick my char, get to station (environment disabled), I get up to 'Service wallet: ' and then eve freezes.

Of course, minute after I posted this, I noticed it was a problem with AOSS and sound being enabled. Will have to find a different way to get sound, though I usually leave it off.

I have problems with sound - It dies after 15 sek (even if I stay on the login screen).

I still have an issue where the game misbehaves if I have the "jukebox" folder available. If I rename it then everything works properly including the non-music sounds.

Have some performance problems with 2 clients. I suspect memory problems as the client has grown again, and is now close to 4G.

My setup:
amd athlon 2840e dual core 2.5GHz
4G memory
nvidia 8800gt 512mb
wine 1.3.23

The user interface is choppy with everything at the lowest settings.
With just 1 clients things seem to be ok.

Went to wine 1.3.33 as I read there were some performance improvements, but EVE crashed on me during startup. Then went back to 1.3.23, and now sound has died. It did work before with 1.3.23, so I suspect a setting somewhere has been clobbered.

Time to upgrade?

P.S 2 screens of 1920x1200, which may not help eitherCool

I have renamed jukebox and now sound is working for like 30min before it dissapears - some buffer overflow probably ...

PS. I have done futer tests - sound gets killed when I click some other window then EVE (i play in window). So losing focus on EVE window kills sound .. nice

Starting and stopping the echo test in the audio tab brings the audio back.

But it will go again once you unfocus the window.

Another strange thing I noticed is that only one of my clients allows spinning in station. In the other the ships have a fixed orientation.
Both client have their own complete wine directories.
I suspect an obscure setting or key/mouse bindingCry

Ok, no sounds was due to the jukebox being back, probably because I copied another EVE install directory.

I did some experiments with EVE in a small window and that also takes between 1.8G and 2.0G, so it isn't the graphics settings, the Crucible expansion is just a memory hog somehow.

I'd really like to know what uses up all this memory and how to disable itSad

And true - doing "echo" in settings returns the sound ... Shocked

I have sound disabled, optimized for performance, only 1024x768 full screen, disabled resource cache, and i'm getting like 725MB per client right now.

I also had the 'no spinning in stations' problem at one point as well, but that seems to have cleared up now. Blowing away cache seems to have helped as well.

Ok, zapping cache seems to help a bit. Haven't tried doing a busy mission without sound yet.
Things are clearly less spiffy when a lot of stuff is happening.

I can not spin my ships in station anymore :(

Nothing happens, ship just remains static.

That hurts a lot, CCP.

(or I am just dumb and didn't notice spinning is enabled somewhere in options Smile)

Hmm, I already have to complete different wine directories, so no duplicate file access and stuff as mentioned in the other thread.
Each client seems to want 1.8G to 2.0G of virtual memory, but only used about 800M of physical memory.
I don't see any swapping happening, but with just 2 cores and 4G of memory I suspect that with Crucible I got either of 3 problems:
- each client now needs a full core, so some extra cores for OS etc might be nice
- linux or wine gets confused by the large amount of virtual memory EVE wants
- too much load on my single 8800GT (even at low settings)

With just 1 client I have no problems, so I suspect EVE has become too resource hungry.
As this even happens at low graphics settings more cores and/or more memory are probably required.
A second graphics card to limit resource conflicts would probably help as well.

SighSad

A year ago I could easily run a single full screen client and 2 in smaller windows, a few updates ago this was down to 2 full screen clients, and now I am down to a single client.

If 'Load Station Environment' is turned off, now it just shows a static picture of your ship. To have spinning, the option needs to be enabled, way it works now is that if station environment is enabled there is the button to toggle whether you are in spinning mode or CQ mode.

Ok, I think I am back in business with 2 1920x1200 screens:
- Crucible 1.02 produced no discernable differences.
- updating RAM from 4G to 8G seemed to improve things from 'pretty hopeless' to "somewhat sluggish".
- changing screen update from 'immediate' to 'default' made the UI responsive again.

I still have to experiment with:
- 3 clients
- higher than minimal graphics settings

Physical memory usage is between 700M and 900M, while virtual memory usage is between 1.8G and 2.0G.
I suspect that virtual memory usage is the crucial factor somewhere, maybe in combination with Wine and Linux.
Note that each of my EVE clients has its own complete Wine directory, so there should be no file conflicts.

At least I don't have to buy a new computer right away.
To be continuedCool

Ok, small update with some extra data.
On lowest quality settings, with 1 full screen client and 2 smaller windowed clients memory usage gets near 8G, and performance starts to become a bit sluggish on my main screen.
You definately seem to need more than 2G per client, and a core per client would be nice as well.

With 2 full screen clients, and my main screen set to highest quality things get sluggish again. With everything at their lowest settings, except for shaders and textures at medium, things are back to being spiffy. And they don't look too bad.
My CPU and GPU are definately not up to doing the highest settings justice.

With a bit of luck I can postpone building a new system until AMD and Nvidia have 28nm CPUs and GPUsRoll
