I am a star trek fan and after reading about the elusive "other" that is the emerging antagonist of the new storyline the character reminded me of a star trek Voyager episode i saw a few years ago called "the thaw"

the thaw and the sleeper jove have many similarities...

both involve a civilization (or remnants of one) to hook themselves up to a virtual reality that would keep thier minds occupied till they would eventually be woken up.

The similarities don't end there in the thaw the virtual reality eventually makes a character called the clown. The clown does not want the people in the VR world to wake up for if they do he will cease to exist.

What if this "other" was some sort of program that went awol like agent smith in the matrix and started to control the entire shabang? What if the other saw the remaining Jove as the ultimate enemy because they might convince the sleeper jove to wake up? So ther other makes the jove disease in some sort of inception vr world where it makes the perfect disease that cant be cured.

the other could be using fear just like the clown but the other could be doing it in the form of propaganda that makes the sleeper jove think they are constantly being under attack.

*** spoiler ***

The Next Generation episode is named Conspiracy.

A "superior" centipede like life form, a parasite, possesses Lt. Commander Remmick and Starfleet high command with the objective to transmit a homing beacon that would reveal the location of Earth to the rest of the parasite's kind.

The "Other" reminds me of those possessed by the parasite in the episode, and their desire to destroy Starfleet and Earth.

E: Everyone should remember this iconic ending of both Picard and Riker firing at Remmick to destroy the parasite.

Call me Joe.

I read the DS9 novel sequel to that episode, it wasn't bad.

DS9: Lessor Evil (part 1) and Unity (part 2).

Edit: Had them reversed.

"The other" is a philosophical/sociological reference with undertones of the psychiatric. It's employed to illustrate groupthink and mob mentality. The black sheep is "the other." Black sheep are rejected by their "brethren." I'm surprised denizens of this culture didn't leap on this, but for referencing pop culture which habitually steals from existing sources. One of the features of this present cultural clime is to single-out, marginalize then dismiss the "other" among them. They then tout their advanced thinking, while demanding general tolerance from others.

(Then again, I guess it's not so surprising after all.)

The Nobel Laureate (for literature) Hermann Hesse wrote "Steppenwolf" about "the other." Interesting read.
I wonder why that band (that did a lot more songs than Born To Be Wild) chose that for a name.

Probably why Santana named that album "Abraxas", another character from a Hesse book.

What you don't know could definitely hurt you.

We must accommodate the idiocracy.

Spoilers (read templar one)

The origin of the other is revealed in Templar One. The sleepers were a subsect of the jove, who created a virtual reality world to inhabit, with the enhuadnni (spelling?) assisting them in entering and exiting. All were welcome, with the rules being that you had to have been born in the real world, and you had to still have a body in the real world. The other arose in this virtual world, having neither been born in the real or having a body in the real.

It has since managed to latch on to the Empress Sarum, after tampering with her clone reconstruction machine.

The dustbunnies are created using harvested sleeper implants, not created, murdering the sleeper's real world body the get them. Each clone is infected with the conciousness of the sleeper they murdered, some of which are under the other's influence.

Probably almost entirely unrelated, but "The Other" makes an appearance in the steampunk webcomic "Girl Genius" as a being with dubious identity/motives, and the ability to control minds. Lots of speculation about its origin there, too, and they appear to believe Wikipedia's article on the psychological concept of other may be relevant.

I better go check on my dustbunny character. I haven't logged in there in over a year... who knows what kind of trouble he's been up to if he's got a sleeper AI floating around inside him.

I don't judge people by their race, religion, color, size, age, gender, or ethnicity. I judge them by their grammar, spelling, syntax, punctuation, clarity of expression, and logical consistency.

so like the clown from the star trek episode you are saying the other is some sort of transient manifestation of the collective psyche of the sleepers and thats the reason why the other is trying to controll dustbunnies and capsulers because they use the same tech used by sleepers and are inherently suseptable to the collective influenece...

pretty darn cool

The jove aren't asleep but if you read the sleeper history you will see why they are in wormholes, their vr world, the sleeper that shares the empress's mind and remade her.
