Several questions on Faction Warfare

Lately I've become somewhat interested in Faction Warfare. Since I've never looked it up, I don't know the first thing about it, so I figured I would hop on here and ask a few questions for those who know! =D

1) In faction warfare, you only have 1 opponent faction, correct? For instance, Minmatar vs Amarr?
2) I've been told that your opponent's enemy ships can't enter your space, as your faction NPCs will slaughter them. So, where does combat take place? Say I'm fighting Amarr: If I can't go into Amarr space and they can't come into mine, do we go into other race's territories (say, Caldari?) to pick fights with each other? Or are there other places to go?
3) Assuming #2 is correct, it is pretty safe to say that you are basically untouchable in your race's space from enemy militia (assuming you are not in a corp that has been wardecced, I'm guessing?)
4) Is it possible to join a militia as part of an NPC corp? Or do you have to be in a player corp?
5) Do a lot of people still do FW? Or is it pretty much dead?
6) Is it fun? =D As an alternative to 0.0 pvp, that is. I have long periods where I can't log on, and 0.0 political situations have had a tendency to change out from under me, so I decided highsec would be my best bet until I finish what I'm doing and can play more. But I'd love to have some pvp option available to me!

Thanks!

since no one has replied yet i'll take a stab at this for you

1.) Amarr and Caldari are allies so if you join FW you would be fighting Minmatar and Gallente
2.) from what i understand they can enter your space and the NPC Faction ships around gates plus any player FW enemies can shoot at you. I am not sure on the slaughter part though as I don't think those NPC ships use any EWAR, so theoretically you could just warp away
3.) FW has missions that send you into enemy territory to complete objectives

This might be more helpful

Never been part of FW myself, but seen a fair share of Frogs vs. Squids in Caldari low-sec.

Some highlights of joining FW:

The NPC Faction Police DO employ EWAR, but they take forever to lock onto you, their tacklers will web you from the start, and after that you can essentially insta warp away (they will give chase). You can kill enemy FW frigs with a destroyer.

Most of the fighting takes place in LowSec between the empires, Tama through Old Man Star are normally quite target rich, and are the typical stomping grounds for Cal/Gal FW. The whereabouts of the Minmatar/Amarr fighting sometimes spills over into this area, but not really sure which systems they normally fight in. Nourvakaiken is the system Caldari bases out of.

Most fighting takes place either on the Hi-Sec entrance to the rival faction or in deadspace plexes, fighting on stations in FW is usually rare, and often gets annihilated by whatever local pirate group occupies said system.

Essentially after joining any of the 4 Faction's NPC corp, you will not be picked up for any corps until you have a few dozen kills under your belt, typically anyone in the NPC Corp is largely looked at as a Spai, and wont go on many roams.

Most of the FC's in FW are egotistical retards that don't know **** about calling primaries, general low-sec navigation, or how to build an effective fleet.. its all kinda slap togethered and whelped to the first thing that out numbers them. Several of New Eden's better known solo pvpers have slaughtered FW fleets singlehandedly.

If that wasn't enough, You can blitz the missions in a Stealth Bomber/Interceptor and make decent money while completely annihilating your faction standings in your rivals space.. (Cadari and Amarr or Gallente and Minmatar will not be able to enter their perspective rivals space after a pretty short stint in FW).

1) 2 opponent factions

2) There is no NPC navy in low security space so that's where almost all of the fighting happens. However, you CAN go into enemy highsec and assuming you can tank the npc navy long enough, you can kill war targets. Mining ships and haulers are especially vulnerable to this. NPC navy does not warp disrupt you at all.

3) #2 wasnt really correct so... no, you're not untouchable.

4) Yes it is possible but you're better off joining a player corporation as soon as possible.

5 and 6) FW gets you a crapton of legal targets to shoot. Over time it also becomes a competition of sorts with the opposing faction(s). However, there's no point in FW. There's no win button you work your way towards, there's no reward for capturing and holding systems... FW related special rewards for killing members of an opposing faction are so pathetic you should just ignore them right away.
But like I said, it gets you lots of targets and the right people can teach you a thing or two.

Looking at your post I guess the points to remember here are:
no, you're not safe in highsec if you're in the militia but
only a very tiny fraction of FW related pvp takes place in highsec and when it does happen in highsec it's usually ganking, not mutual pvp.

You should try FW if you're interested but you dont need it to do pvp. Just undock and go to lowsec. Someone's going to try and kill you soon enough.

regarding hostile highsec regions:
- you can't cloak
- don't fly heavy ships which warp slowly
- enemy npc does not warp scramble but they web and the BS hit quite hard once they lock you (see second point)

how to fix eve: 1) remove ECM 2) rename dampeners to ECM 3) add new anti-drone ewar for caldari 4) give offgrid boosters ongrid combat value
