I would rather have a T+ skiff variation that had room for a cloak.

For this to work in a halfway decent manner, CCP would have to change ice blocks to ice cubes. Make it so they take up 1 m3, and take 1000 to refine. If they don't do this, in order to balance these new miners, they would have to mine a block every like 5 minutes or some other absurdly long period of time, otherwise you invalidate exhumers.

mining laser mines maybe 90 ice cubes a minutes, and in terms of refining, 1,000 ice cubes are roughly equal to block

For posting an idea into F&I: come up with idea, try and think how people could abuse this, try to fix your idea - loop the process until you can't see how it could be abused, then post to the forums to let us figure out how to abuse it..... If your idea can be abused, it [u]WILL[/u] be.

Hmm. I don't really have a problem with the idea of this proposal, but as a proper devil's advocate... let's try and break it.

One block of ice is 1000m3.
This poses a few snags. The prospect and venture have holds that can carry 5/10 of these, but what about any other ship with a turret. How big can you get regular cargo holds on a BC or BB? Expect to see the return of indies with a single mining laser.


The Prospect and/or Venture will need to have their bonuses to keep ice mining in mind.
Maybe not a huge problem, but something to be looked at.

Should there be different crystals for each type/subgroup of ice?
Probably for subgroups IMO.

Would the crystals degrade like mining crystals?
My gut says yes.

What skill(s) will power this crystal/laser combo?
The requirements for the laser shouldn't change al all. However the crystals should use the Ice Harvesting skill. Level one would unlock T1 crystals, and level 4 would unlock T2. The Ice Processing skill could be used instead to match up more closely with ore crystals. /shrug

Indeed so, at which point they may aswell just magic in some T2 Ice Lasers instead. Why you'd make Ice Crystals just to have to nerf existing options to compensate I dunno.

CCP already said there will be a way for you to mine ice in frigate holes soon. So I'd be guessing either frigate sized ice harvesters, or a new ice mining t2 venture hull.

Or restrict it like a covert ops cloak and mjd's. Can only be fit on a Venture or Prospect.

A tangential possibility would be ice mining drones...and add bonuses to certain hulls for them. Then any ship can be used in WH's and with a depot handy can switch to combat ready if need be.
