OP, i respect your point of view, but i disagree.

strategy plays such a huge role in pvp, that one could argue it outweighs almost everything else.

the option to zoom far out is critical for players - and not just FCs, but fleet members. i think the way the zoom mechanics work now is exactly the way it should remain.

i understand the immersion point you brought up, but if it bothers you that much, just don't do it.

It took 35 posts for a decent reply. Who knows what ccp has in store for Eve in the future, things will need to be shaken up sooner or later. It won't stop me from enjoying Eve until then.

Good thing you didn't play 4-5 years ago where you could zoom so far out, it would transition to the solar system map, then scroll out further for the main map, i miss this feature also :(

In space 150 kms is negligible.

It relates to 150 meters of atmospheric battleground.

Actually nothing stops light in space, you can possibly get much better zoom.

Space ships are gigantic, 1 km in size for a battleship.

Why don't CCP make special surveillance drone for Recons, which can see beyond the grid once deployed and possibly jump a gate?

This post sums up why the 'best' work with DCM inc.

WARP DRIVE makes eve boring

really - add warping align time 300% on gun aggression and eve becomes great again

Every competitive game has a limited zoom in order to create a competitive environment where position and environmental awareness are very important. Zooming away from your ship in Eve for a ridiculous amount not only completely breaks immersion and makes 0 sense ( how is it even possible?) but it also creates an unbalanced field. Players that see Eve as what it is, a video game about pretty spaceships, keep the camera at a reasonable distance are in a major disadvantage to players that like to play around with tiny dots having a full tactical view extending for hundreds of kilometres.

CCP time to get on with times and along with manual spaceship controls limit the zoom out at a reasonable distance. I can assure you new players that find out how much you can zoom away in this game are completely put off. It feels like someone long time ago forgot to put a reasonable limit in place and in the end it was just left there as an intended but broken feature.

P.S. If having a tactical view unnaturally extending for hundreds of kms was a feature you were proud of you would showcase it in your awesome trailers. But that will never happen because it looks silly and makes no sense.

Read the lore.

Tactical is pretty important

you are asking for a different game.

I'd love to see that feature brought back.

Actually not having this ability would be totally unrealistic. Out in space there is no cover to hide behind, nothing is hidden unless it is cloaked. Any future starship is going to have sensors through all spectrums (and gravity, exotic particles, etc) and a computer capable of rendering that sensor data visually to the captain from any frame of reference desired.

Actually there is an unrealistic lack of available sensor data available and is available in an unrealistically limited form. But then again this is not real after all.

Space combat in this game is tactical not fly by wire, which sets Eve apart from all the 1st person shooter games and this is a good thing.

one issue with zooming that makes me sad is using the tactical overlay in bright places (amarr systems mostly) while doing anything related to the god awful mission illumination. If I could toggle the bracket around my own ship instead of being forced to hold alt I'd be happy.

it's not broken

  - remove the cloaked from local; free intel is the real problem, not  "afk" cloaking -

Drones. Drones of the camera flavour. You should look it up sometime, most things have an explanation in EVE. The amount you can zoom is probably relative to the default size of the grid.

Leaving bewildered.

Try holding both mouse buttons and moving the mouse (Left button first, then the Right button). You don't need the wheel and it's faster and doesn't break the wheel or the index finger either.

1. The hitchhikers guide to the galaxy says space is very big. with that being said the drone camera tech allows the camera drone to fly around or look way out, but then again as a sniper you being hardly able to see me at extreme ranges because your to busy looking at your ship would be an advantage for me.

2. tactical awareness: something called an overview let you know if anything is on grid for about 350kms or so, if you want to worry about looking around which is a indefinite amount of directions, good luck doing that with out an overview. This isnt COD where you only have to worry about 360 degree laterally and above you, this isnt startrek/starwars where almost all ships are on a 2d plane.

TL;DR dont zoom out from your ship and dont use the overview and have at it

Someone needs to go read the f***ing Camera Drones chronicle if they don't know "how is possible".

Come on, this is space and space like thousands of years in the future. A camera drone that can zoom 200km away from your ship isn't that preposterous considering things like how I can fly a ship the size of the empire state building across the known galaxy in a hour.

I think Dust 514 should have a camera that only looks at your avatar's face, obscuring not only most of the screen but looking in the opposite direction that your gun is pointed. While the camera could be used for situational awareness, CCP understands that most people really like how gloriously handsome their avatar looks and it's the main reason most people play the game.

Haha, fantastic

But seriously, I just always imagined a bunch of tiny camera drones around my ship. They did that in my favorite anime, Outlaw Star, and I always just kind of thought I had a really fast drone or many drones I was cycling through when adjusting my position

On that line of thought, I always thought it would be cool to have some EWAR module/device that actually messed up other players screens, not allowing them to see properly for a few seconds. Or maybe delay their visual feed or something like that.

Somewhere in my cockpit there is this weird thing called a tactical overlay. It allows me to see the grid in 3D from inside my ship!

this guy has never been in a large fight.

when i zoom out its to get rid of lag i don't care about where i am or the enemies are i leave that up to my FC i just align lock and press F1 when i'm told

as for how it is possible all it is is a camera drone moving further away from your ship

This is the best thing I've seen all day.

OP is clearly high, though. This is one of the most competitive games on the market. As is evidence by the proliferate use of kill mails and killboards. Either the OP is trolling, or he thinks StarCraft II and its ilk are good RTSs. I hope he's trolling.
