Good Machariel fit for lvl4's?

I had also tried 1200 mm and 1400 mm artillery on my Mach before I sold it. In sum arty-Mach is not a good option because high caliber arty has very low rate of fire and abysmal tracking speed. On the other hand short range autocannons were annoying to me because I prefer medium to long range engagements flying level 4 missions. That's why I chose rail Vindi over Machariel because hybrid charges have ideal damage profile against Gurista and Serpentis rats coupled with great range and Vindi can deliver substantial DPS using rails.

That's about how long it's been since I thought about projectiles. :)

I've actually looked at my standings, and the Minmatar really, really don't like me. Would training to T2 ACs even be worth it if I'm more likely to fly in Amarr or Caldari space?

I suppose that depends a bit on what else you have trained and how much isk you feel is worthwhile to spend on mission boats.

personally I just love the mach as it goes 1.5km/s with a MWD, has good agility, and warps fast. the good damage and reasonable damage type selection are just nice bonuses. I think it complements the paladin rather nicely. I use both ships heavily. Mach is perfect for hit and run missions. where with any other ship you would spend more time traveling than in the mission.

Looking at the skills I have, I ended up buying a Nightmare instead, which I could immediately arm

Super satisfied with it as a mission runner so far. Much, much easier than with my apoc. Now I can fart around and earn some money while I train something else.
