Invulnerable while docking?

This is purely anecdotal, but I have noticed being unable to initiate a lock on people when they don't do something right away. I think however it's an illusion due to the combination of game mechanics and server ticks providing the appearance of invulnerability.

If you ever sit in a FW complex acting as bait, you'll notice that the target's name and ship show up in your overview, but with an absurd distance that's technically off grid. This, combined with the 1 sec server ticks and the way the game interprets being "out of warp" (described by ISD LOF above) is what I think sometimes makes people appear invulnerable when exiting warp. It's more an artifact of all the things going on behind the scenes as opposed to the true invulnerability when undocking, you can't just sit there after warping and expect to be safe, you have a second, or fractions of one to use to make a decision, and spam ctrl click on your target Pirate.

This is my anecdotally based armchair theorycrafting though. I'm not very tech savvy, so my pet theory may be entirely wrong. I look forward to Gully's test results.

Grrr.

Don't think anyone mentioned this yet but if while in warp to the docking bookmark you set destination to the target station and activate your auto pilot you dock as soo as is possible on tq , apparently the gap in which you are lockable is 1 server tic.

TESTED!

POSITIVE!

I did the following.

Logged on Sisi with an alt, fleeted.

Squad warped around, after aligning both, so we entered and (most importantly) exited warp exactly at the same time.

Started spamming 'lock' (ctrl + click on my sexy alt chick on the overview).

While in warp got message 'can't lock, you fool, you're warping!' (or something like that).

Then...

Landed on grid and the message changed to 'TARGET IS INVULNERABLE' for about 10 seconds. After that, I could lock her ass.

That was already op success (since I could try to initiate lock I must have been out of warp myself), but to make sure I also confirmed I was able to activate MWD and move while my cute alt remained unlockable.

Regarding the time, I didn't manage to time it precisely, but it was roughly 10 seconds.

Yes, speed was showing a few m/s while the chick was unlockable, zero m/s when she was lockable, but can't be 100% sure that the two things are linked. Will try it later with a slower ship or a pod (she was in a covops), since in theory they should take more time to fully exit warp.

Just wanted to add that LackOfFaith's gif motivated My Laziness to actually test this.

That is bizarre, and something I have not seen documented any place else, or experienced myself. Thanks for the info!

So you are basically screwed when the station takes a long time to dock you, even though you are in range and have requested dock. I've seen it take as long as 10 seconds between these 2 messages.

It's because you're exiting warp out of the docking range of the station.

The seconds are the time your ship needs to move towards the docking range (until the station actually shows at 'zero meters' on your overview).

To avoid this, make a bookmark close to the actual station model in space, as suggested by the above posters.

EDIT: if you're in docking range (the station shows at zero distance), you dock immediately after clicking 'dock' (technically maybe a second or so, but you will never die, I promise).

I now remember I've read somewhere that CCP put it in to make sure everyone has a chance to load grid even with (some) lag before the fireworks commence, but I don't remember the source.

Why are you talking then? I experience this on a daily basis where as your killboard indicates that you do not. Take your flaming elsewhere.

LOL.

God, they even let monkeys play the game now from the looks of it.

Uhm, this is exactly what we have been saying.

You can be locked, when you exit warp (which is at 0 m/s).

That could be...let me do a quick google-fu on Dev Blogs to see if I can find it.

Edit:

Did some Google-fu.

No Dev posts or so about it.

However...

Same topic. Same answer, you get the invul message, because you are technically still in warp according to the server.

Clearly you are lacking both the knowledge and the ability to pvp.

exit warp =/= be visible on grid. Smile

In part, that's there to allow the in coming person to load grid, before they get blapped.

Woo! CSM XI!
