Some questions about EVE pilots...

Before I start working on some of my own EVE fiction, I have some questions about the pilots.

They have pods they are left in when the ships is destroyed, but:
-Do they sit in a cockpit/bridge, or are they in a pod?
-Do they stay in the pod the entire time?
-Is their pod just their escape route?
-When they die, do they have to be in the pod to respawn or is that automatic no matter where they are? Even on a planet, getting shot in a bar fight?
-Do they wear clothing in the pod, or are they nude?
-Are they awake and conscious when flying?
-Is there another crew in the ship, or are they solo?
-Can others fly with them?
-If they are not in a pod, how to they control the entire ship alone? Are they hooked up matrix-style? Or is it more traditional switch-flipping, button-pressing, stick-pulling?
-Do they walk around, maybe go to the lounge or their private quarters?
-Is there misc non-combat/flight crew? Like a bar tender, or cargo manager?

Things that keep me awake in the wee hours of the night when the servers are down...

1) They do not sit in a cockpit/bridge. They float in a pod, hooked up by cables and surrounded by a breathable liquid.

2) As long as they are in the ship. They do get out of their pod when going out of the ship, like your Captain's Quarters.

3) No, it is how they control the ship entirely. They use the pod to connect mentally to their ship, allowing them to control it as if it were their own natural body.

4) Yes they have to be in the pod. The pod waits until a breach is detected in the pod and then fires off the transneural burn scanner, destroying your brain while creating a digital copy that it sends to your cloning facility. If you are on a planet and get shot, you have no trasneural burn scanner and so you die, though you can still be replaced if you had a backup clone (a previously-uploaded brain map saved somewhere on a computer somewhere). These backup clones however, due to being saved ahead of time, only have memories up until when they were made. Ergo you won't remember your death or anything from the previous days/weeks/months.

5) Can be nude, can be some clothing. Falcon has said in a previous post that whatever they wear "can't trap air".

6) Yes.

7) There is a support crew. Due to the capsuleer controlling many systems with their mind, capsuleer ships have about 50% less crew than a non-capsule ship.

8) If you mean in the pod? This would probably cause huge issues and might result in mindlock (coma) for both people.

9) No buttons, no stick. Look at your character in-game. See those implants on your back? Your brain is hooked up to the pod through those, and you control it the same way that you control your RL body. Once hooked up in the pod, the ship literally replaces the capsuleer's body. Your turrets are your hands and fingers, your engines are your legs, your reactor is your heart, etc. This includes even discomfort and pain when taking damage.

10) Yes, they can leave the pod and walk around like any other human.

11) Yes.

You should probably read through the lore on https://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Portal:EVE_Fiction , and the chronicles, stories, and scientific articles at the backstory part of the EVE website, http://community.eveonline.com/backstory/ . If you can afford it, you should also look into getting EVE Source if you are interested in learning more about EVE's lore.

Before I start working on some of my own EVE fiction, I have some questions about the pilots.

They have pods they are left in when the ships is destroyed, but:

-Do they sit in a cockpit/bridge, or are they in a pod?
From what CCP has put out there, I believe they are within a pod that is networked to the entire ship.
-Do they stay in the pod the entire time?
Except when they dock up, I believe so.
-Is their pod just their escape route?
Escape route and escape pod.
-When they die, do they have to be in the pod to respawn or is that automatic no matter where they are? Even on a planet, getting shot in a bar fight?
The pod is not necessary. Our DNA is contained in digital form, and we can be reconstituted regardless of how we died.
-Do they wear clothing in the pod, or are they nude?
I think we have our choice of fashion.
-Are they awake and conscious when flying?
Yes.
-Is there another crew in the ship, or are they solo?
Other crew members facilitate different areas of ship controls, with larger ships requiring more crew. However, this crew is never visualized or manifested within the universe.
-Can others fly with them?
Nope, only one man per pod.
-If they are not in a pod, how to they control the entire ship alone? Are they hooked up matrix-style? Or is it more traditional switch-flipping, button-pressing, stick-pulling?
I believe they are hooked up Matrix-style within the pod.
-Do they walk around, maybe go to the lounge or their private quarters?
Only when the ship is cloaked, in station, or you need a bio break.
-Is there misc non-combat/flight crew? Like a bar tender, or cargo manager?
There had better be a bartender on my battleship, or I don't know what I've been doing it all for.

Samira's answer is more accurate, AFAIK, but I have something to add:

When you are docked, you can leave the pod, but when not docked and in space, generally you can't get out and walk around your ship...unless it's a capital ship, because those have pod gantries on board. Recently I've found that some people think this article suggests that other ships can have pod gantries as well, but if you want to play it safe, asume no pod gantries on sub-capitals.

Some small ships, like shuttles and interceptors, can be flown fully fitted without support crew. A lot of frigates can also be flown without crew as long as there are no modules fitted. This is a guideline, however. CCP mentioned that if players want to fly crewless ships, there is some leeway. Some respected roleplayers fly fitted, crewless frigates, but you may get a lot of Roll if you claim to fly a crewless Titan.
