Adjusting gamma of games without that function: any tips?

Short and simple: the new brighter nebulas in Phoebe are making my (impaired) eyes hurt. Increased lighting also has fu**ed contrast in many of the not-so-bright areas of space and i'm twisting the camera around more than usual just to find spots dark enough to see the interface against them.

In any other game, I would tinker with the gamma & contrast, but this is a case of *CCP*. Also, my nVidia control panel doesn't shows any option to force a gamma setting into games, so tough luck.

My question is: Is there some way to force a certain level of gamma on a game, bypassing the game settings?

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/calibrate-your-display

It seems this feature is built into Windows. I'd say try there first, or get a third party gamma adjustment program.

Adjusting the gamma under the desktop color settings in the nvidia control panel does work in window mode. I'm unsure if it works in fullscreen mode though but I'd be willing to bet it would work in fixed window mode.

Super silly question for my own purposes, but do you happen to be using an LED backlit monitor or perhaps an LED backlit IPS monitor?

Some programs in the vein of SweetFX can allow for additional altering.
