Is there a point to me even trying to pvp in a frigate? I don't really have any damage dealing skills well trained at all on this character at the moment. So far I can pretty much fly Minmatar covops, interceptor, firetail at least has the full bonus, and Gallente t1 frigs.
I definitely won't have a booster alt either helping me out.

I suppose if I was good enough with maintaining range and speed I could dictate the engagement to an extent. It seems though with an arty fit inty it would take awhile and I'd not have the range or dps really to take the target down fast enough. And that would perhaps have to be the way I engage since I likely don't have the skills overall to go brawler fit and survive atm.

It always depends what are you going to hunt. If you are going against armor buffer ships, then you can kill them even with just one DPS if you have enough time and manage to stay outside their weapon range. If you are hunting active tanked ships, then you also can usually easily kill them with low DPS if you can successfully neutralize their cap.

So as usual it boils down to the knowledge of what your fighting profile is. Once you know this and once you understand how to rate which prey is fitting into your profile and which not, then you will get successful in PVP.

Well then there is the obvious question of how can I tell beforehand if they are fitting an active tank at all? I get that some ships have bonuses to active tanking, but even if it doesn't an active tank could still be used. Or perhaps this just means getting used to how most pilots will fit certain ships in EVE.

An Arty Firetail with dual webs will suit you well. Total range control in web range, which means you can also leave the fight if you are taking too much damage.

The ability to choose your damage type to suit your target will go some way to counter your low DPS.

Well even if I change my damage type I am assuming it won't matter as they could have plugged the hole. That also seems more like a luck of the draw type of thing. I really don't get why chosing damage types is really that great as a result. Unless they didn't plug any holes in which case I suppose I could chose the ammo, but also carrying around every ammo type in Navy quality is expensive, especially when I am more then likely going to be exploded.

The duel fit web arty sounds interesting though! Only downside there also is if they have drones and I can't outrun them I suppose that alone will tear down my hp.

Then shoot their second weakest damage type? :) This is the kind of thing you get with experience, you'll get to know what the common fits are for certain ships.

A supply of Phased Plasma, Fusion, EMP and some Nanite will set you back less than a mil mate. If you find ammo too expensive, then you're in for a world of pain when you start PVPing and actually losing stuff.

1. Scout their killboard.
2. Don't scout, but instead fly a ship that you can disengage with if things are going poorly. AB/Web/Scram (overheat mids and burn towards celestial), or long point MWD (for example).

Don't get too hung up on the numbers. This isn't some other game where you have to be sufficiently well-geared to compete. Many of my ships do less than 100 DPS, and have less than 2,000 EHP, yet they're still able to hold their own. You'll never know if you're good enough until you actually try, and chasing skillpoints in search of perfection will only mean you'll never undock.

There are certain things you should try to have done if you intend to PVP regularly though, like training Thermodynamics.

Definitely not afraid to undock, lost several ships in the last few hours just messing around :D And yeah I need to train to overheat .

I totally hate the cookie-cutter AB + Arty RFF but it's the best option if you're just looking to hold a target at the edge of scram range, avoid most of the incoming DPS and chip away at them until the tank fails. The RFF is particularly irksome in 1v1 because it's the fastest T1 frig that can also fit dual webs, so if you add the effect of speed-boosting implants then it's virtually impossible to hold one down by yourself and kill it.

As a side, it pisses me off when the "elite" frigate zealots who fly this crap have the audacity to get upset when a gang comes to them. It's not very nice to spew hate at people who aren't ignorant enough to feed you an "honourable" 1v1 when you're in a fit that's designed solely to allow you to wriggle free if the fight isn't going your way.

I guess even solo has gone to the cowards.

You should really take a look at the rail-navy comet (flies with keep-at-range-20km) or the rail-atron. Both mainly got a dcu and AAR for tank, mwd and long point with rails to just kite the hell out of other people. Also works splendidly with a near untanked catalyst.

If your skills are not up there yet, shooting form afar could do the trick for now (and 150+ dps at 20km are amazing)

I've seen RFF's do quite well in solo PvP.

Well it doesn't matter if you lose. I've lost all bar 1 1v1 fight. Ive found it makes you work transversal a lot which is how I won my first one. The older player just tried to orbit me while was changing direction and speed etc...

there is no such thing as "you need x dps and y dps tank to kill something". When you are new it might look as if all what counts is dps and tank but you will quickly learn that this is not the case. In fact, eve would be a very boring game if it would be so simple.

luckily it is not.

how to fix eve: 1) remove ECM 2) rename dampeners to ECM 3) add new anti-drone ewar for caldari 4) give offgrid boosters ongrid combat value

1. After some time you learn the "usual" fits for most of the ship classes.
2. If you are the one who decides to go into a fight, then it is always a good idea to check the killboards of your enemy. Often you get a clear indication how he is fitting his ship and what his preferences are.
