It is my goal to try everything in this game. Thought I'd go gank a miner or two, will this ship work? It has a theoretical DPS of 422 overheated, but only 316 with my skills.

That other thread was about ganking under gate guns, I'm just talking about hitting an AFK miner.

I figured defense was irrelevant since I'm dead as soon as Concord spawns, I only included the SB because there was nothing better to go there.

Figured AC was better than arty as far as DPS, not as if you can alpha a retriever.

Later I might try a more challenging target, like a indy off of a gate.

So does Concord start to respond as soon as you scram them, or only after you start shooting?

This fit should get you started.

If you decide you like ganking check out these guys. They have lots of guides on how to gank effectively and everything in EVE is more fun if done with other people.

If you really like the Thrasher I would start out with something like this:

[Thrasher, Cheap gank]

Gyrostabilizer I
Gyrostabilizer I

J5b Phased Prototype Warp Scrambler I
Supplemental Scanning CPU I, Scan Resolution Script
Optical Tracking Computer I, Optimal Range Script

200mm Light 'Scout' Autocannon I, Republic Fleet EMP S
200mm Light 'Scout' Autocannon I, Republic Fleet EMP S
200mm Light 'Scout' Autocannon I, Republic Fleet EMP S
200mm Light 'Scout' Autocannon I, Republic Fleet EMP S
200mm Light 'Scout' Autocannon I, Republic Fleet EMP S
200mm Light 'Scout' Autocannon I, Republic Fleet EMP S
200mm Light 'Scout' Autocannon I, Republic Fleet EMP S
'Arbalest' Rocket Launcher I, Caldari Navy Nova Rocket

Small Projectile Burst Aerator I
Small Projectile Collision Accelerator I
[Empty Rig slot]

The Concord countdown starts the moment you initiate any aggression, be it firing or activating the warp scram.

Using Thrasher instead of Cat just because I can fly the Thrasher, actually skipped over almost all small ship skills with this toon and not interested in diverting my primary interests, which doesn't including ganking. Just looking for a little change of pace. In all actuality the life of a miner ganker sounds pretty boring, and I'm not quite sadistic enough to get any kind of thrill off of tears alone.

Assuming you are as new as you lead on to be, that is a very astute observation, props. 9 out of 10 people don't recognize the difference.

The problem with using the thrasher over the catalyst is you can't get the thrasher's ROF below two ticks unless you have maxed skills, use a t2 fit and have a +5% ROF implant. The alpha is also greater with a catalyst blaster fit with the equivalent meta levels you posted. Considering the time limit, the ROF becomes a huge factor.

By the looks of your quoted DPS number you have decent skills, if you have trained most of the gunnery support skills up already, it would not take very long to get into a catalyst and be much more proficient.

But if you are set on trying to use a thrasher:

For starters it is marginally better to use phased plasma than EMP on an untanked retriever. (9.4k EHP vs 9.9k assuming maxed skills)

The prop mod is unnecessary if you scout your targets out first and book mark their location. Use a venture to scout, fit it with a ship scanner and a passive targeter. Scan them, make sure they are untanked and bookmark the location, then go back to the station and get your thrasher.

If they are AFK, fitting a scram is also unnecessary.

Unless you have taken steps to ensure they are AFK, Antillie's mid slot configuration is probably how I would do it.

Stick to .5 systems for best odds.

The math says it is possible if their tank support skills are low but it will be really close every time and you will probably fail more than not. Good luck.

Basic tenets of ganking:

- choose a target wisely: you don't want to attack a Procurer because they are tanky. Go after something like a Retriever or Covetor.

- be as cheap as possible: you don't want your ship to be worth more than the target.

- tank is useless: CONCORD will ignore any tank you fit. Instead, fit for speed and better applied damage.

- get your warp-in right: You want to land more or less on top of the target. If you warp into a belt and have to burn towards your target, the miner (assuming he/she is active) will see you and can take evasive action to mitigate or avoid your damage.

- overloading is your friend: since you are going to die anyways, you might as well go "all in." More damage = higher chance of success.
