YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES

but How exactly will it work?

i get arrow keys will control the direction of the vessel, but will this effect the camera?

will the + and - still be used for speed on the numpad key?

Can i 'lock' my camera to the front of my ship as a makeshift first person mode?

can i lock the camera from behind my ship so its facing forwards at all times?

I have so many questions! i'll post more later.

This is absolutely necessary and long since asked for by the community.

keeping a dual system: maintaining the current system, while adding the WASD system (and by extension joystick) is necessary with Elite Dangerous launch announced for Dec. 2014

This is very viable for small ships but strategic fleet engagements would suffer from being forced into WASD

Over all this is a good thing and will re-attract former and new players to try EVE.

I totally agree. I don't want the current system removed. I purely want the joystick option to be *there*.

I wonder if they add a 'cockpit mode' if as a result they might change the way effects are shown on your ship. like there might be graphical problems with a nos in your face, taking up your whole vision.....but whatever they do it would be worth it.

The experience of just auto-piloting with an iteron would be awesome. seeing the station zooooooooom into your vision.

But regardless, even if cockpit-mode is too much. i'd love people to suggest idea's for how the camera could work.

I feel some sort of camera-locked-with-orientation-of-ship is absolutely necessary to *feel* like you are piloting a ship, even if cockpit mode isn't an option.

There is no way the old system is going anywhere.

Tackle might be a lot more fun, and capable now though. Spiraling in until you are under the guns should be easier than ever with manual controls.

It seems to me that the real challenge to making this work is on the pvp end. In all cases however If there were some sort of a camera mode that shows the target ship relation to my ship and where I am flying it would solve some of the problems.

I think the best solution is one where instead of trying to make this work with the current interface the pilot has the option of entering an alternative visual mode or a full on 'Valkyrie' mode in much the same way that a pilot can enter a separate mode when docked and walk around the station.

The current system is very effective for what it does(although not as visually engaging as first person) and I think attempting to blend the two ideas will be extraordinarily difficult and result in mediocre results when the current system has had so much time to evolve. It's like trying to build a unix os out of windows after 20 years of windows evolution.
imho a second visual mode, even if imperfect, will put more options on the table and make the game more appealing overall.

Would be a great feature.

I like the idea of out of cockpit view maintains the current control system, hit a key / button and it jumps you into the cockpit with joystick controls similar to the old space game Tachyon (minus the afterburner and slide function if they couldnt be implemented). Im also thinking Occulus here if that was at all possible, no matter if it isnt.

Have some keys thats can be binded to joystick buttons / throttle controller such as target nearest pilot, fleet member, war target etc. Or joystick button/s to cycle through ships / pilots in space, either through distance, ship type, pilot name for example. Then the usual fire weapons etc. Making the functions assignable will let people choose their own setup.

Im sure loads of ideas will be thrown around :-) Great stuff.

The camera should automatically lock behind the ship once you touch the manual controls and release when you try to move the camera.

no, no it shouldn't, you should have the option to do this but not be forced to

Agreed. If you want that, there's a button on the HUD that resets the camera to a close focus on your ship.

Want it badly.

But I imagine with the viscous physics it will feel very awkward. What will the turn rate per key click be and how will it interact with ship parameters (slowing down when turning, making 180 turns, etc).

Also will it be arrows only? Cos WASD conflicts with keyboard shortcuts.

And why would there be server side issues?
Have it compute stuff client side.

When a pilot is in a ship in EVE, is there not a cockpit? Doesn't the pilot just see the outside space as if they were the ship itself? I have not read the lore in many years but why not just take the ship's place with the camera?

I'm happy to experience the weird fish-physics of eve. it should feel nothing like ELITE and more like ....WOW? Homeworld?

Reguardless, it will good to finally control ones ship manually.

This will be interesting. I believe requesting manual control has been something I've suggested a long time ago (much to the flaming and trolling from others) and was told that "you can't because of the servers 1 sec cycle". Either CCP is changing this, or those people were talking out their asses.

With the camera control options, there would have to be one that puts you into a 'chase cam' view.

Looking forward to this.

I think this is a good idea but is completely cosmetic in a sense that It won't affect actual gameplay. Given how our weapons automatically target and fire being able to maneuver the ship by hand will ultimately affect nothing, though it might allow people to avoid collideable objects a bit easier. I think it is a great addition to the game still.
