Dev blog:
http://community.eveonline.com/news/dev-blogs/quick-give-me-manual-control/

They are adding WASD keys for manual flight correction because new EVE people get confused when double clicking in space. Totally optional for bittervets, of course.

Will strafing allow for new content?

Can we out-Keanu missiles fired at ships?

Will this result in new fleet dance flash mob content?

Is this the end of EVE: Valkyrie?

Will we finally be able to post on the forums using a smartphone without having a nervous breakdown?

Is EVE dying?

Call me Joe.

Ok. Ive been thinking about this all day.

Before I start, I want one thing to be perfectly clear: I ******* love this WASD control thing, always wanted it. Finally I can do a ******* Barrel Roll.

Now that that is out of the way, I do have some concerns. namely one: That this is a huge **** you to existing players, and not in the way you think.

For years, WASD control capabilities have been suggested in F&I, and have been shot down repeatedly. I am guilty of shooting a few down myself. CCP has always maintained that WASD control capabilities weren't compatible with the 1Hz server ticks and blah blah latency excuses blah blah impossible or super hard for reasons and things. But now, a couple people go to CCP and play for 30 minutes.. probably mumble something once about WASD not working.. and ******* presto! WASD Control is being implemented.

Today I'm going to share with you an experiment that was born out of recent new player experience testing that we have been doing here at CCP HQ in Iceland.

Born out of new player testing? How about numerous F&I thread suggestions? Do existing players get any ******* credit for the idea, or shall we solely thank the 30 minute Eve focus group? Do existing players's suggestions even register on the radar anymore? Whats next? 30 minute focus groups by never-played-eve-before average joes on how to fix Sov or POSs?

Anyways, I guess im steamed by the wording of the devblog. A slight change recognizing the numerous requests of existing players would have been great, but since it didn't, all I can see is a huge middle finger to existing players, and its going to be really hard to give the finger back.. seeing as that it will soon be occupied by the W key.

Since the cessation of their usefulness is imminent, may I appropriate your belongings?

I can't manufacture any outrage over any of this.

There's a million angry citizens looking down their tubes..at me.

I remember when I first started a few months back! I spent a week using celestials and objects to align my ship and move it! Only when a GM randomly talked to me I got to ask how to move my ship properly!

Maybe this will spice up combat by making it more reponsive!

First of all, Lister, I like your jacket. Can I have it?

The WASD option is optional and not non-optional at all. Does that make you feel better?

And soon as you flick the option to the "on" position, EVE will be dying.

This is an outrage. The lack of manual piloting controls was the last thing keeping me subbed. I quit.

All my stuff will go to mittens so don't ask.

It doesn't help at all, as soon as there is any form of advantage to wasd piloting it will be compulsory lest we get left behind, I love this game because it rewards tactics over twitching, this is one step closer to twitch gaming.

Finally.

WASD for now, but joystick is inevitable. I can fly close to someone, release some flammable gas and when they shoot me, the gas will explode and kill them. The only thing missing was the joystick!'

But for real, it actually not a big deal, thus no outrage lol.

While testing it is optional. After release, who knows?

The problem with the point and click in space system were, first, that this wasn't really point and click; it was (probably because of 1 Hz server ticks) unresponsive enough to turn it into point-click-click-click-*start acceleration*-*expletive*-*pop* . Because of the lack of proper fixed camera, it was also imprecise. Controlling direction and range during a PvP engagement with that system of manual flying while being distracted by a ton of other factors, like module cycles and overview, is an art in itself (an art which a casual player like me CBA to master). WASD+fixed camera actually makes flying an interceptor a ton of fun, even more so that it is now, so, I say welcome to our joystick wielding overlords.

Awesome news ^^ can't w8 to fly it that way

I see some more options with it, like when aliigining manualy to some thingy (like planet, gates etc) some stuff take place informing that You can click designed button for warp to it.

I think it's great feature, it wont interfere with standard controls so no one should feel bad.

It'll be optional. Don't like it? Don't use it. You can continue to use the current system.

People will use any excuse to get buttmad these days.

What makes you think wasd will be more responsive?

Especially during large fleet battles? I'm more concerned it will make a bigger issue of my laggy antipodean connection to the server, even more presses to lose now.....

I find it counter intuitive to not be re spawned in my ship when I lose it stupidly....
