We need an Anti-Drone Module

Hi CCP and all others,

let's face it, drones are currently the OP platform. With modules now available to raise drone damage and ships which put out crazy drone damages even with Warrior II drones, mitigation of drone damage is almost impossible since your frigate is usually melted by drones before you even managed to lock them up and shoot one of them.

So what we really need is a module which provides some kind of defense against drones. Smart Bombs (except for the large ones) are just doing too less damage to them and have too short range and completely suffer from the fact that is is absolutely risky to use them in high-sec. Therefore here is my proposal:

The Anti-Drone Electro Magnetic Pulse Module:
- It should take a high slot (but doesn't need to be a missile or gun slot)
- Once activated it takes 5 cap per every 5 secs.
- As long it is activated it will attack the nearest drone which is targeting you within a range of 5km.
- Every attack as the chance of 50% to cause the attached drone to suffer from an electric shock which makes it computer system need to restart. This basically means, the drone stops and is deactivated for 10 seconds until reset-procedure is finished.
- Let the module use 20 CPU and 5 Grid.

Numbers etc. are naturally subject to change, but I think such a module would bring back the balance to PVP against drones. Furthermore this would be another useful option for ships with an auxiliary high slot.

Well, there are allready plenty of weapon systems that you can use to get rid of drones: Rockets, Light missiles, Blasters, Railguns, Autocannons, other Drones, etc. Just lock the drone and start shooting at it. And use a web. Or use smartbombs.

If you want a specialized module, which we don't need in my opinion, i would suggest to change the useless Defender-Missiles into something like that?

If you're talking about Sentry-Drones, which are still the most unbalanced among all drones, why not just let tracking Disruptors used on the Ship that controls them affect the drones too.

Also, actual bombs work too.

Also.. Shooting them.

The issue isn't how to kill them, it's the ships themselves (I'm assuming this is really just a rant on the Ishtar.

you can shoot them and you can kill them with smartbombs. drones are NOT overpowered some ships (read ishtar) MAY make them OP

I'm not going to agree or disagree with whether or not drones are over powered.

But, there seems to be a logical gap in the system. If there are modules to jam sensors, why aren't there modules to jam/nerf bandwith? Other than the logical need for a module that buffs bandwidth.

Gate campers are just Carebears with anger issues.

the same could be said in reverse... if we can shoot and destroy drones, why cant we shoot and destroy the guns on a ship?

To the OP, that's not a bad idea for a module, and would certainly make a utility high slot more valuable without being overpowered. Especially with 5 PG.

Yes, drones are OP. Yes, they need a counter. No, shooting drones from a ship that can field 5 flights of drones is not ******* reasonable.

true but killing a drone is effectively shooting a turret off the ship, those missiles keep coming.

Shoot then, bomb them, smartbomb them, force the parent ship away from sentries, blow up the parent ship, or out-run them. All of these tactics work.

Unbonused hobgoblins have ~700EHP. Slightly under a 1000 when bonused on an Algos or Tristan.
Worms light drones all have somewhere near 4000 HP and Hornet II on a worm get 30HP/s. All that when orbiting at a perfect 600m/s+ at 1k orbit, with 25m sig radius, which is like a shield tanked Merlin orbiting at 960m/s (sig radius makes you artificially faster, and it's an absolute value, not a vector)

A flight of lights with max skills and no Damage Amps do around 100DPS, 400 alpha, roughly 200 volley after resists.

Fastest firing small turrets are overheated Electron Blasters and a set of 3 of them on a 25% dmg hull will do around 100DPS and 100 volley. I'm not going for high alpha (Neutros) because they shoot less often, so missing has a more severe punishment, and they have low tracking. So for the sake of consistency I assume electrons are better suited for fighting drones.

This results in the following:

6-7 seconds to kill 1 drone out of 5, assuming no misses (25m sig). Within those the drones will do 2 volleys. Every 6-7 seconds a drone goes down, and the volley damage drops. The drones will fire 2 volleys each before you kill even 1 of them. There is a good chance 4 of them will fire off 2 volleys as well but that depends entirely on luck, 3 and 2 drones will fire 1 volley each, and the last drone will fire twice.

The 5 drones will deal 2000 raw damage before you take ALL down and roughly 1000 after resists, even if you take them down 1 by 1. There is likely another flight.
You need to deal 3500 dmg after resists to take them all out.

Now you do all that against a ship that has no obligation to use turrets and can comfortably fit neuts and vamps.

Drones were nerfed when Drone Interfacing had its bonus halved, from 20% to 10%. There is no need to nerf them further. Some ships give good drone bonuses and maybe that needs to be looked at. However, as has been pointed out: drones can be shot, disarming the parent ship, which can't be done on any other weapon systemm.

A good suggestion was to propogate to the drones any ewar affecting the parent ship. That would bring them into line with turrets at least, though no-one is whining about missiles.

They were compensated with higher base stats.
The purpose of the change was to make the skill less mandatory to have.
