Help with "Balancing the Books" tutorial mission

I have picked up this mission where I need to salvage a black box from some wreckage, which is guarded by 2 pirates. I have been able to find the wreckage but I am having trouble figuring out how to destroy the pirates.

I am in my rookie ship and I was successfully able to kill a few pirates in a previous mission. For this mission, I am able to lock on a target and fire at it, but I do not seem to be able to hit the target. I have tried to approach it to get in a closer range, but to no avail. I end up just firing at it until my shields and armor are destroyed, then I warp back to the base to "repair" my ship.

I hope it is something simple that I am doing wrong. Can anyone help me with this situation?

do you know what your optimal is? Also, try out the military career. You can get a t1 combat frigate from it iirc and practice a bit.

I had a similar issue. I was using only one weapon at the time. I loaded a second one, and firing both at the same time I was able to take them out.

As said 3 options

A. Learn what you optimal range is and use that (hover over your weapon for info about it).

B. Do not use civilian gun that comes with the rookie ship but use a better one. Even better is to put the mission on hold and do the military career agent first to get a combat ship and some weapons.

C. Ask for help. Contrary to believe, the majority of the players are actually nice and friendly people and dont mind helping a new player out. New player system often come with some vets that are there just to help a newby out.

Hell, most people dont even think about scamming frewh players as they have little to gain from it AND in rookie systems you are even protected from certain ways of harm.

Fist thing is that you don't likely have your guns grouped that way they shoot a simultanious salvo instead of endependently.
Secondly if you have problems with falloff and optimal ranges click on the radar display next to capacitor and then move your mouse over the gun or any module and it gives you two pheres that match your module ranges in km's.

Secondly transversial- and angular velocity considerably effects your hit quality but for NPC's all you need is to get them follow you in a straight line at optimal distance.
This however gives them the best chance to hit you as well which is why long range weapons are favoured in PvE as they allow you to sit still and kill the buggers as they zoom in via straight line.

Thanks for all of the replies. I will check range tonight and see if that might be part of the problem. I have only been playing Eve for two days (about 4 hours total) so while a lot of the suggestions make sense, ie range, grouping weapons, better ship; I was hoping the tutorials would give me a better idea of how to implement these ideas.

The game seems very complex at the beginning (not a bad thing) and I read a lot about the game before I started playing. Many of the guides I read were along the lines of: you need to focus skill training, you need this kind of a ship set up, buy low and sell high, etc., but not a lot of information as to how to get a skill book, purchase a ship, or find the marketplace.

I do not want to sound like I am complaining because I really think I am going to like the game once I get the hang of it. I just wasn't planning on getting hung up on a tutorial so early into my experience, after doing a lot of reading up on the game beforehand.

I am hoping the range issue will solve my problems with the pirates. If not, I will probably put the mission on hold, and try a few combat missions just to get a better ship.

Well totorials in eve have always been a bit ... off ... that is these 3rd iteration of tutorials and for the first few years we did't even had those.
Anyway if the tutorials take you nowhere ask here or from ingame help chat though once you've figured out how stuff works in UI you're about done with the tutorials anyway.

Shameless poasting of Help Chat - Reloaded as another option besides the ones named by Baneken

Hello and welcome to Eve.

Since you're in a Rookie ship, you can strip the fitting, repackage the ship and then reassemble the ship which will automatically spawn another Civilian Weapon and Miner module. You can then replace the Miner module with the extra Civilian Weapon you have in your Items Hangar.

Now you'll have 2 weapons instead of 1 which should make it easier to deal damage to the starter rats.

Also look into fitting an Afterburner or Overdrive Module to increase your speed which will allow you to approach and orbit the NPC's. Probably a good idea to set your orbit range anywhere from 500 to 800 m range but no more than 1km (1000 m) range max.

You're limited on ship fitting slots so staying quick and agile by always moving will help increase your defensive tank. Best and easiest defense for new players is a passive shield tank using a Shield Extender. It may seem like a good idea to fit up different types of defense (Shield and Armor) but all it does is provide 50% of each type whereas if you specialize in 1 specific type, you can greatly increase the effectiveness of it's defense. Research / google for more info.

Good luck to you.
