You just watch it. Your launcher will fail to update, the repair tool will mangle your installation and you will be spending all day installing from scratch and re-applying all your settings.

Ever since I heard about a time when a bad patch went to the patch server and made people who tried to log in/patch early have to re-download the whole client, I've started to wait for confirmation that the server is up first before even trying to patch (as Abrazzar mentioned)

Also, this is eve, so keep your tin foil hats on tight, even when it comes to patching.
