Is Sentry Damage Mod really useful?

As per subject, the question if it is really an added value to stock up a dedicated Sentry Dominix with Sentry damage Mods.

In the past it was not advised to use those mods and equip the ship with other useful mods.

What is the situation now?

You mean the rig? It's a bit suboptimal. pretty much any ship that can deploy sentries to effect can pull the three standart, four if-there-is-room DDAs at which point it doesn't add a lot. Not to mention that dronerigs screw your CPU cap which is terribly counterproductive on Shieldtars (4 DDAs) and the entire Guristas lineup.
Domis can three slot omnitank (RAH, EANM, LAR) and an MJD with 4 DDAs or go 4 slot omni (add DCU) and facetank most L4s and comparable sites/plexes/whatever.

Leaves the Geddon (cruises in the highs, TPs and OmniLinks in the mids, MJD, 4 DDAs - no problem) and the Phoon (which has no drone boni s building up on that is a waste of slots basically).

Anything else that could use Sentries? Ishtars ... well an armor Ishtar maybe ... but when do you see those around?

It used to be a good rig before they added Drone Damage Amplifiers. Since then it is pretty much useless.

CCP should add more NPC 0.0 space to open it up and liven things up: the Stepping Stones project.

This. They're mainly a holdover from before Drone Damage Amplifier modules got added. They're potentially useful in a few fringe situations, but generally DDAs are a better option.
