New way to display the resist profile of a ship

Hi everyone,

A couple of weeks ago, I had a thought at work about how resist profiles are displayed in game. I'm sure everyone is familiar with the 4x3 rectangle of rectangles that displays your resists. Its boring! It displays the information you need, but that's all it does. It isn't particularly pretty, and it doesn't draw the eye. Its just sort of there, displaying the resist profile of your ship like its important.

I had this really spectacular idea to put that information into a polar graph (a circle) to see how that looked, and I was suitably impressed by the results.

So, after some discussion with my people in A Band Apart about how best to display the information, and more than a little help from our truly spectacular art department (Brenn Derrington is a saint) and our font guy (Rixx Javix) I present to you:

"The ABA Radial Resist Profile"
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B_2HDqqaFRxZUndKU1dJSE5XMDhzMFdRODBDTEdSelFEbkVF/view?usp=sharing

The resist profile is based on a Myrmidon with a Damage Control II and two Energized Adaptive Nano Membrane II's (and maybe an Explosive Rig, I can't remember).

This format has a few benefits. One, its bigger, so if you wanted to include portions of the graph representing the extra resists provided by modules, you have room to do it. Two, its gorgeous. I think it would work really well in-client if the art team at CCP had a go at it (I have absolute faith in the art department to make anything look great).

This is very creative, pretty, and interesting. I'm assuming this would display in some fashion next to the HUD?

I have to be honest with you, I don't really like that graph a whole lot. I prefer the resistance profile that currently exists in the fitting window. It's compact which saves screen space, and it's easy to read and understand. Yours is larger and I, personally, have a harder time reading it. Cool idea, though.

That could work quite well. I was actually just thinking to replace thr current resist display in the fitting window.

that ring is really hard to read at a glance

This, it's really hard on my eyes. A better way to do the radial would be have both the shield and armor start at the bottom, and if something would reach 100% resist, it would only goto the top. Then you would have shields on your left side and armor on your right. This way you don't have that hard to look at striping going on.

Lowering the average to make you look better since 2012.

This is what I was thinking. Rather than having the bars for each layer overlapping eachother, just have one go one way, and have one go the other. The hull can stay as it is, since its ring is so small. Not to mention that people *usually* don't hull tank, so they won't be needing to pay as much attention to the hull ring anyway.

I also am having issues reading that proposed graphic. It may look pretty... but it isn't all that intuitive (for me at least).

Sometimes simple and "boring" is better.

I agree. It's not a bad idea to try to provide a different way of visualizing ship statistics, but they need to be intuitive and easy to understand at a glance.

Agreed that it's a very nice concept and looks pretty, but a bit hard to read at a glance.

I sort of like the general idea but I agree with folks complaining it's hard to read.

Maybe instead try to graph the percentage of half circle? Say, left side for shield and right side for armor?

Thanks for the feedback guys, I understand where you're coming from. I'm going to redesign on the half-circle idea and I'll repost the updated version in a few days/a week or two. We'll definitely make version 2 easier to read.
