Do NPCs run out of ammo eventually? And what is with their ability to stay locked on you from hundreds of meters away?

NPCs do not run out of ammo. their lock ranges are sometimes a little on the long side, but they are also generally pretty squishy, slow and harmless (compared to actual players).

I should buy an Ishtar.

Hundreds of meters indeed, what a rangeLol

On a more serious note, a lot of the NPCs can lock out past the normal 250km player limit, but they can't attack outside of that range. Most NPCs AI and ship setups are from a long time ago where eve was a very different game. Some of them have a total of 10 guns/missiles even.

As I recall, some Guristas rats fit more than that (based on turret models from the days when each turret had two models). I can't remember which (but I would guess that it was Rachen Mysuna) but I recall counting 12 turrets (24 models) on at least one Guristas Raven (which was also lobbing out missiles).

indeed i see the excess guns all the time, like machs have 8 guns, launch several offensive missiles, plus defenders.
i warped into a storyline for a lvl 3 last night and was pointed by a merlin model 62 kilometers away

Besides for not running out of ammo they also don't run out of cap. You can neut them silly, but they will always have cap. Lame, I know.

I've had a Gurista jam me from 550km away. It was... interesting.

Applying neuts and nos has a percentage chance to disrupt their active tank, IIRC.

Jacob,

Rachen Mysuna is the 'boss' NPC of the level 4 'Gurista Vengeance' mission with an almost insane active tank, hence the 2.5million bounty on him.

Eve Minions is recruiting.

This is the law of ship progression!

I find applying damage works far better to disrupt their active tank. When they die in the time that it takes fro them to boost one or two times, applying a neut/nos is just an annoyance button that I will probably forget to hit. As for the whole does it actually work bit, well I don't think anyone really knows at this point. Probably so buried in the code and possibly modified at some point, that no one at CCP even knows. and I'm not sure players even have a reliable metric to test it.

A neut would work swell on NPC's if it would actually work. Doing a L4 security mission (for example) you could then instantly drain the cap of frigs and cruisers when you have one or more heavy neuts fitted on your BS (buhbye ewar frigs).
