Going for a "walkabout"

I just got a Helios with a Covert-Ops cloak and I planning to go exploring for a week or so. My question is when I log off each night in the un-friendly confines of space should it be in a station or make a bookmark in the middle of nowhere? I'm concerned if I did it in a station in 0.0 space the minute I undock I could get creamed. What are the odds of someone finding me while I am logged off just sitting in space? Or is there a safer option besides returning 40 or 50 jumps back to Hi Sec. each night?

Assuming you don't log off aggressed your ship will decloak and warp to a random point within 1 million KMs in a random direction in which it will sit for 1 minute before completely despawn from the game until you next log on.

If you log off without any timers your ship will vanish after 2 minutes max.

If you take all the sand out of the box, only the cat poo will remain.

If you make a safespot between celestials (planets etc) and log off there you should be safe enough (unless you have agression). If you log off cloaked you are perfectly safe. Your main worry will be gatecamps.
Most player-controlled stations in 0.0 won't let you dock btw.

If you're in a CovOps in a safe spot (especially if you have a lowslot ECCM fitted), you're not likely to be probed out in the 1 min that your ship sits in space after you've logged off. I would log off while cloaked (though IDK if logging of turns off cloaks) in a safe spot if I were you.

And, if you aren't familiar with the mechanic. When you log off, your ship performs an 'emergency warp' 100k km (I'm pretty sure that's the exact amount) away from your current position. And then, after a time, your ship will simply vanish from space until you log back on. If you're under an aggression timer, it will take 15 min to disappear; if you're under a NPC aggression timer, it's 2 min; otherwise it's 1 min that you stick around in space.

In low and null-sec, it's generally a good idea to find a station before you log off in case a fleet gets into a scrap. I'm not sure if anyone's ever logged into the middle of battle before, but I am sure that you don't want to be the first! Smile

I can't get rid of my darn signature!  Oh, wait....

^^ This is correct.

A couple pieces of advice for nullsec:

1.) Don't log with aggression, and Log in space, at a random safe spot. If you don't know, learn how to make safe spots.
2.) Learn about bubble mechanics. Bubbles are responsible for the majority of destroyed covops ships.
3.) Most stations in Nullsec are PLAYER controlled. The standard setting is to DENY docking priviledges to anyone NOT blue. Those that do allow neutrals to dock, typically charge a docking fee.
4.) Gate camps will often bubble your ship and attempt to decloak it. A good habbit is to hit "align to" before you hit "warp to", especially if there is a bubbler on grid!!!

and finally, while exploring please do your share to help stop botters. The most common nullsec bot is a computer controlled player character that just flies around system continually blowing up NPC rats in belts and anomalies, collecting bounties or minerals. When your done for the night, do NOT LOG OFF. Instead, use your map to find a nearby system with a large number of NPC kills. Go to that system, create a safe spot in that system, and just leave your ship cloaked in the safespot. Noone can declaok you, and if your client crashes your ship will despawn like normal, so your ship will be completely safe!!!! Bots are programmed to stay safe whenever a neutral is in system. So doing this will stop it from farming the system. Normal Nullsec players understand how to defend themselves, and will quickly adapt to your pressence in system. Another benefit of this are entertaining evemails and delicious forum posts from locals that lose out on their botting income. You can make a lot of isk by making them pay you to leave the system!

Grizznitt, thx for the additional advise. I must say though the mechanics of this game are simply "mind boggling". Each time I ask one question a dozen more come to mind!Blink I have only been playing for about 8 months but I feel I will never understand half of what everyone explains or discusses on these forums.Ugh Oh well, having fun while I learn. Thx again everyone.

Everyone in this game is still a noob at something. That's a fundamental truth of EvE. Big smile

Update, now with Crucible, when you log of while having an active aggression timer on you (someone is shooting you for instance) you will NEVER warp away until:

1.) 15 min have past after you logged off
2.) 15 min have past after the last aggression act.

Which ever ends the last, that's your warp out time. So if people can keep agro on you (web you for instance) you will not warp away and you will log in with 1 ship lost.

I played (briefly) in beta in 2002/3, my first 'proper' character in game is from 2006 and yet I am still completely clueless to certain elements of the game.

Its partly the reason why I still love it so much. As in life, eve knowledge is mostly a bunch of blagging.

If you log off cloaked, the cloak drops, but you still initiate random warp.
