I am thinking of using my alt as a freelance freighter pilot and I was wondering what the perils and pitfalls are in this profession and is there any room for the little guy when there are large corps like red frog around.

I was planning to work in hi sec to start with

This may help you get started.

I forget the name of it but there is a public channel where people can find hauling jobs. Key aspects are to find freight for the return trips & make sure you don't accept suspicious freight with very high collateral.

Stay away from Uedama

A scout is essential, if you don't scout ahead, you have no one to blame but yourself when you get ganked.

Watch for frigates closely orbiting or sitting at zero on the in-gate, if you see one, your cargo has most likely been scanned.

Use your scout to web your freighter into warp.

Use a cargo scanner to scan plastic wraps from contracts you have accepted, if they are under collateralized, break the contract and keep the loot. If they are severely over collateralized, be vigilant as a gank may be imminent.

I'm curious about the resistance to joining RFF or PushX. RFF seems only to skim an insurance fund off the contracts, leaving the rest to the pilot, who has a ton of jobs ready to pick up. If you're a freelancer, you're going to have trouble with visibility and price pressure simultaneously.

Regarding RFF and the like, I understand that there is a waiting list to get in to that corp
I also use my hauling alt for other industrial activities so I need a degree of flexibility

Usually plenty of public contracts available. Make sure you don't accept the ones with too high collateral. And everything Loyd said.
