LOL, here's some more terms I need to look up (with respect to EVE):
comm routines, doctrines, fcs, super pilot, sov, pos

Comms- voice communications
Doctrines- specific fleet ships and formations
Fcs- fleet commanders who lead fleets and call targets
Super pilots- pilots of titans and super carriers
Sov- null/0.0 sovereignty
Pos- player owned starbase

Yeah, being stuck with your character is sorta harsh. I regret a little choosing a female toon, and even more such a generic name. Being called Heather on comms is pretty weird if you are a guy. But this was in fact the first game of this type I've ever played. Only other multiplayer online game I've played is backgammon, and there you can just create a new name and most sites that keep ratings and such will just merge records for you. Seems like there should be a way to change your character even if you have to pay for it. The change could be recorded in your profile to prevent using this process for most nefarious purposes.

think he missed the comma between comms and routines:

comms = hang around on enemies comms (Teamspeak, Vent, Mumble) to keep track of what they are doing.

routines = When are they doing certain ops (mining ops etc.), where do they stage from, when are their jump freighters hauling goods etc.

doctrines = A doctrine are certain ships with specific fits that supplement each other in a fleet fight (say long range armor tanked DPS fits, armor logistic cruisers, long point fits, etc).

FCs = Fleet commanders. For an enemy fleet it is good to know who the FC (and back up FCs) is. Take them out, and you more or less leave the fleet you are fighting without command.

Super pilots = People who own a super capital (Titan or Supercarrier). Good to know who they are (and who their babysitting alt is), watchlist them and you can tell when it is likely they are deploying said ship (to know when to back off or when to pick up the batphone and call for back up to score a nice kill).

SOV = Sovereignty null-sec. Systems in null-sec that can be claimed by an alliance (as opposed to NPC null-sec which are owned by NPC factions).

POS = Player Owned Structure. These are structures anchored around moons where people can base out of and can do many things (safe keeping of ships, production of goods, moon mining, research, guarding SOV related structures, jump bridge networking). These are destructable and usually very interesting objects that are prime targets in a war.

I often wish I could change my name. I usually just throw *some* name into screen names, usually something with "phantom". I didn't realize it would actually become a real "name" per say. But this is what I am stuck with, and this is how people address me on TS
/me shrugs

And it hsoulnd't be a problem getting into a corp, we have plenty of other people in our alliance with weird names, it's the reputation that's important

Hey, as a carnivore the salad part of your name offends me. In fact expressing your real world sense of humour and personality by stringing together a few letters of the alphabet to form an character name that is amusing is a crime. How dare you?!? ;D

I applied to join E-Uni and my application was rejected, before I even got an interview. They have a policy of not explaining the why, so I was left with a big question. I believe I followed all the instructions and I am generally an inquisitive and positive player. It was suggested to me that my player name may have been the reason. Then in the E-Uni chat room I was in, people kinda piled on that. So my question is this: Is my character name going to be a problem for me?

Let me just say first off, I'm a 32yr old manager and I'm not a child. I'm not 16 and I'm not a FPS player on voice who's constantly yelling things about people being gay, stupid, l2p etc. I realize my name is cheeky, but seriously, I didn't realize how "serious" this game is. I got a response to that of "welcome to the real world". My name comes from a cute thing my gf says instead of cursing sometimes, "butt salad". Okay, I get it; it's kind of childish. In almost any other MMO or game for that matter, i couldn't imagine that a name like mine would ever be questioned, and I have seen MUCH worse in the this game. I've never seen anyone get booted froma guild or group in Guild Wars 2 for a name like mine. I'm not an expert though, and this isn't GW2. When people started piling on that my name could be offensive to some and might cause problems for me, I was stunned. I was told corps might not accept me, or FCs in fleet chat might be annoyed at my name. But, that was just one chat room at one time. So, I'm reaching out to you guys.

I also briefly looked into name changing, but that probably isn't going to happen. It's been suggested that CCP doesn't do that unless the name is reported as offensive. I could report it myself, but then it was suggested I might get a name like "Minmatar Citizen 720480257304423". It was also suggested that I just create a new character, but I don't want to start over. I'm 17 days in and that's 17 days straight of training and such, and I realize that isn't very long in the grand scheme of this game, but idk, I don't really want to start from scratch at this point.

TLDR: Do you think my name is going to cause problems for me, given the serious nature of this game?

I dont believe butts salad is odd or offensive. While a lot of the sexually deprived ones may assume it has to do with the buttocks I actually think it was more like cigarette butts...

Joking aside you can always try petitioning for a name change. Find two or three names you may want and see if the GM is having a good day.

Other option if your really new and low sp is biomass or create a new main. You have three slots to play with.

There are players out there with worse names than yours and CCP allows them to keep it. Its only when you start ganking that it becomes an issue... just ask the former Anal Canal and wonder why Lord RektAnus still has his name.

Thank you all for your comments, very much appreciated (esp J'Poll, your info supply is quite extensive)! I have been granted a name change exception, due to the newness of my char, and that fact that I haven't done much of anything yet except the tutorial and started SoE epic arc. I wanted to use "Octave Arpegius" but both that and "Arpegius Octave" are taken! Neither has a picture when I bring them up, so I'm not sure what that means... somehow they reserved the name without creating a character, or hid their image somehow? Anyway, I didn't have time yesterday to give it much thought after Discovery(ing) [anyone catch that?] that the names were taken.

They're probably legacy characters that were created prior to the Incursion expansion in November 2010, when we got the current character generator. Any old accounts that haven't logged into the game since then will show as faceless.

Some people are still using older characters as forum alts, that never log into the game, which is why you'll still see the occasional faceless poster.

The old character generator created some epic portraits though, Backdoor Bandit, and Skyflyer* spring to mind

*Skyflyer is the original source of "Dude, your face"

In the beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

Same here. When I started the game it was on a Friday after work, and I just wanted to get into the game and see if I even liked it. I didn't spend too much time on my character's look (though it's def grown on me) and the name I just poached from one of my GW2 characters. I wasn't trying to be 12 or anything, just get into the game and see what it was all about. With RPG-ish games, I'll often skip character creation to get right into the game, see how it runs, see what it looks like and how it plays, and then go back and spend hours and hours making my character. 18 days later, I'm still playing and totally forgot to reroll.

No word from CCP yet on the name change, and given the reaction here I def want to change it, or reroll I guess. I don't want people making assumptions about me early on w/o a track record, and I don't really care about the name at all.

Honestly, if you care that much what people think and want a new name that bad, just use one of your three account character slots to make a new one. You keep saying you don't want to start over but 17 days is NOTHING, honestly. I'm currently training on a single skill that takes nearly that long to complete. It may seem like you've put a ton of time and energy into your char at this point, but believe me, you haven't. And the longer you wait to start over, the more you lose. Just suck it up and make a new char with the name and persona you want and before you know it you'll be right back where you are now but without all the hassle.

Manners maketh man.

No character has ever been deleted in EVE history by CCP so those are simply incative characters that haven't logged since 2011 (since game won't let you proceed unless you make a new face first).
All of the old portraits have been removed from the database IIRC but there are sites dating to character changes that gave you old face and a new face side by side.

http://www.eve-avatars.com/ is a one such service but apparently not funtional anymore since it cannot find my character for example.

One day I will be a famous pilot known throughout the cluster, now that my name has been rightfully corrected to my true, Conjoiner name. This isn't the last you've heard of me.

Seriously though, thank you all for your help and advice. If I have more questions about the game I'll be sure to post here. So yeah, I'll be posting. It seems the rookie help channel is very hit or miss... some pilots like to grief rookies in there. The rookie help reloaded room is good though, as are these forums.

EDIT: Odd, it shows my new name everywhere except on my posts. In the thread list, it shows my new name, as well as up top where it shows my signed-in player name. Tried logging out and in, no change. Ah well, some legacy of my old self lives on. Anyone else seeing this new post as being from "Butts Alad" to the left under my pic?

Congrats on the name change! Give it some time. Profile pictures take a while to propagate to the forums as well. I'm sure it will update soon.

You will always be Butt Salad in our hearts!

On a side note, why would Butts Alad be perceived as a spy/awoxer? Just because it's a silly name or is there some reference I'm missing?

Final thought: you should've change it to Asssa Lad IMHO.

This made me laugh so hard. Hadn't thought of it, but I think everyone in this thread would have either (or both):
1) At least chuckled to themselves at the sheer ridiculousness of the whole thing
2) Immediately went "I KNEW he was a spy/awoxer!"

You do see a lot of silly names in EVE but they tend to be on "throwaway" characters. Mainly alts that people don't care about the reputation of called things "Jita Dude" etc. It's also common for awoxing alts because they just get trashed once their reputation is ruined (though alt recycling for sec status purposes is frowned upon).

That's entirely untrue. You ever play Xbox Live? People name themselves all kinds of things when their account isn't throwawar or "alt-able" at ALL. It's a culture mismatch, one I think that condemns the culture of Eve players more than "casuals" or the much larger population out there who go against this "grain" and name themselves Jitaman or Flyboy or whatever else. Not everyone wants to name themselves after NPC characters for some pseudo-roleplay.

Don't kid yourselves. Even the dirtiest pirates from the birth of EVE have been carebears. They use alts to bring them goods at cheap prices and safely, rather than live with consequences of their in game actions on their main, from concord to prices

EVE is not Xbox Live (thank goodness). Your actions have consequences. No one is stopping you from making a "silly" name. They can, however, assume you are too immature to join their corp.

Have you ever been part of the recruitment process for a corporation? You are bombarded with applications from people with names like "Butt Muncher", who just want to awox/spy/steal from you (I still have his corpse). Now I ask you, which is easier? Deleting all the apps from people with stupid names, or screening through them all to find out who is actually stupid and who was just being silly?

You can't just queue up for the next lobby. The things you do in EVE persist - your character can develop and maintain a reputation. It's an immensely complicated game. If you want to be "casual" about it, you WILL miss out on some things, and you have to be prepared to accept that. It's not the fault of some "elitist" player that wants to make you miserable. It's your fault for picking a silly name. Don't blame it on "culture". If you want to be "casual", you can always find other "casuals" to play with or be learn to play solo. (Not recommend, new players. This is an MMORPG).

Who said anything about role-playing? I picked a name without numbers, because, you know, numbers are hard to pronounce mid-word. Ugh
