Please Help - Is My Name A Problem?

I applied to join E-Uni and my application was rejected, before I even got an interview. They have a policy of not explaining the why, so I was left with a big question. I believe I followed all the instructions and I am generally an inquisitive and positive player. It was suggested to me that my player name may have been the reason. Then in the E-Uni chat room I was in, people kinda piled on that. So my question is this: Is my character name going to be a problem for me?

Let me just say first off, I'm a 32yr old manager and I'm not a child. I'm not 16 and I'm not a FPS player on voice who's constantly yelling things about people being gay, stupid, l2p etc. I realize my name is cheeky, but seriously, I didn't realize how "serious" this game is. I got a response to that of "welcome to the real world". My name comes from a cute thing my gf says instead of cursing sometimes, "butt salad". Okay, I get it; it's kind of childish. In almost any other MMO or game for that matter, i couldn't imagine that a name like mine would ever be questioned, and I have seen MUCH worse in the this game. I've never seen anyone get booted froma guild or group in Guild Wars 2 for a name like mine. I'm not an expert though, and this isn't GW2. When people started piling on that my name could be offensive to some and might cause problems for me, I was stunned. I was told corps might not accept me, or FCs in fleet chat might be annoyed at my name. But, that was just one chat room at one time. So, I'm reaching out to you guys.

I also briefly looked into name changing, but that probably isn't going to happen. It's been suggested that CCP doesn't do that unless the name is reported as offensive. I could report it myself, but then it was suggested I might get a name like "Minmatar Citizen 720480257304423". It was also suggested that I just create a new character, but I don't want to start over. I'm 17 days in and that's 17 days straight of training and such, and I realize that isn't very long in the grand scheme of this game, but idk, I don't really want to start from scratch at this point.

TLDR: Do you think my name is going to cause problems for me, given the serious nature of this game?

Yes, remember when everyone accused of being a troll? That should have been your first clue. There is so much subterfuge in this game, everyone is well, paranoid. Anything that makes them think you are not who you say you are will always be a better safe than sorry situation.

Welcome to Eve.

If the name is gonna be a problem with that corp, there's other corps available to join. Also there's 2 other character slots on your account to create different characters.

If you're bound and determined to join Eve University, I suggest you create another character on your account and use that one to apply to Eve University. 17 days of skill training is nothing to worry about and as a new player it's much easier right now to start over with a new character before you get too attached and invest a lot of time in the current character...

Really....just really...when you picked your name...you had NO clue about is.

When people have called you a troll because your name just gives it away too easily (p.s. I still think you are one)...no light above your head appeared.

Well, guess what, with the name you've chosen...yeah, it is a problem (well, at least to be taken serious at all). Good luck with it, you just found out...actions have consequences.

P.s. it is not the offensive part, it is the "well look at mr obvious spy/troll/awoxer" part.

P.p.s. doesnt matter if you arent one, as explained. From experience people are paranoid. They are rather safe then sorry and will already with a "normal" name distrust you, let alone with this one.

I appreciate that you're being helpful, so I am taking it that way. But please, take a step back for a sec. Yes, when I picked my name I didn't think people would think I was a spy. I didn't even know there was spying in this game. I knew almost nothing about this game before I signed up to try it. I joined because an article I read online about a massive battle with thousands of players... sounded cool. So no, I didn't know that this would be a problem. I ALSO didn't realize that you accusing me of being a troll was because of my name. Seriously. I asked why you were accusing me of that and I didn't get an answer. I thought it was because I was asking questions that showed some basic knowledge of the mechanics of this game, but that's only because I've been reading A LOT online about how the game works. There's no reason to take such a hostile approach to your response.

Why is it that someone who has a slightly cheeky name that isn't "Ash Starpilot" is seen with such, idk, hostility? Like a spy would even choose a name that would draw attention?

You do see a lot of silly names in EVE but they tend to be on "throwaway" characters. Mainly alts that people don't care about the reputation of called things "Jita Dude" etc. It's also common for awoxing alts because they just get trashed once their reputation is ruined (though alt recycling for sec status purposes is frowned upon).

I don't think it will be insurmountable, but it will be an extra hurdle for you. First you have to convince them that you are actually a "main" and not some kind of malicious alt. As you get older and have more corp history (especially with higher profile corps) this will get easier for you, because most awoxing alts with silly names are freshly rolled for their purpose. May be a bit rough to get started though.

J I seem to remember you mentioning that you didn't intend a long term commitment when you picked your name and here you are still using that character. Correct me if I'm wrong. Drunken spur-of-the-moment decisions can have long term consequences in EVE. Always remember that...

Thank you for your thoughtful response; this has helped clarify things. This game truly is unique, and it seems every day I'm learning something. I really didn't realize how serious and heavy this game is when I started. I'm learning, and this is part of it I guess.

pretty much what Cara said.

After you have a bit of corp history then it's more about your actual reputation and less about your name.

I had similar problems with my dumb name. Sly sounds like Spy? Dunno! I put about 1/2 a second of thought into it and like you I was more concerned about losing SP/time rather than worrying about my name.

I figured I could change it later on. Months later I found there was no such option so I'm stuck with it for life.

If you want to be referred to as Butt Salad from here on out well then that's on you lol.

Think of yourself, 3 years from now, still playing EVE. And you're on TeamSpeak with 100 others and they're all (for the millionth time) lolling about your name every time it's said.

Reroll.

The lesson is that if you want a cheeky name to be more subtle about it, I rolled with a, since biomassed Sad, character called Titus Phook for a long time before anybody picked up on it. The name's still free AFAIK P

In the beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

Oh, that would be awesome. I've submitted a ticket to support asking what my options are, but I'm preparing to roll a new char tonight, just in case.

Thank you all for your help in this.

Hey butts (sorry made me laugh).
1st. It's a cool name but in Oog services remember what you are gonna be called I have been called forest, or archer depending on the group. So what are they gonna call you, just because it is your oldest character doesn't mean it has to be your only character many players have alts become thier main.
2nd. Until you join a corp that can help you ask questions here, and if you really want send me a mail I'll be glad to help you with basics if you want when I get home from work tommorow.

Always willing to help all you have to do is ask, though if you're in the other fleet I may not help the way you want. Just a heads up. Pub Channel: Lost Souls Trading Post

If you do reroll or get a name change make sure you post and let us know. You seem like a good newbie to keep track of. Big smile

ty, I will. I do apologize to J'poll and the 1 other who thought I was a troll in my other post, b/c of my name I guess. Still learning the game and you have to try and think back to before you knew ANYTHING about the game and then take that reference when considering my questions. I don't think I was rude or anything, I guess my name+questions made them think I was trolling for some reason.

In any case, I do genuinely like this game a lot, and i have many many questions.

Actually, here's one:
If they do not allow a name change and I need to reroll, how do I give my assets to my new character? I see there is a "send money" option so I assume I can do that, but what about my meager belongings? My plan is to skip the tutorials (except adv military where you get the dessy) and optimize my skill training to get me back in my Thrasher and doing the SoE Epic Arc ASAP.

Contracting assets is the easiest way but it is only available on paid/plexed accounts.hould be an option on the left hand menu or under business in the top left. Also if it's just a name change assets shouldn't be an issue as nothing truly changed.
