Oh ****... thats really awesome.

I love the realistic approach to celestial bodies. Does stuff actually orbit planets and stars too?

Yep. Stations orbit planets, planets orbit stars. They do it in real time though (and in 1:1 scale) so sometimes the effect is very subtle.

The real fun is with multiple star systems and exploration...

Here is the latest pic of the week , showcasing a screenshot from a previous trunk build with the player scooping fuel from a stars' chromosphere. Check out the condensation inside the cockpit window btw. O_o

( http://imgur.com/a/HkBWO ) have made an album with all of them for anyone interested)

Also, Sandro posted a new poll regarding changes to the beta2 flight model. Be sure to vote (if you care, that is).

btw..it seems that people are scrambling a lot to test a number of things in the beta, and some other stuff really goes unnoticed, especially in the sound department. For example, hear this.

I know, no sound in space, etc. Don't care.

lastly, some more pictures.

2.05 patch enabled online mode for me (there were a lot of crashes after hyperjump before 2.05) and it turned out I'm not interesting in it as much as I've expected: due to lack of depth in this gameplay (do 2 kinds of stuff - hauling and fighting - to buy better ships to do 2 kinds of stuff faster) I already did everything I could during 10 days passed since 2.0 beta release.

And it seems I'm not alone - there is thread on Reddit about lack of long-term goals and interest to the game. Unless Frontier will add some RPG elements and building gameplay (planetary bases for example) game will be nearly empty in few weeks after release. Gameplay which was fine 30 years ago on empty computer games market is turned out to be pretty trivial, banal today (even in procedural environment) when there are many MMO(RPG) alternatives available.

Perhaps CCP should consider ditching Valkyrie right now: if Elite cannot hold most players for more than two weeks - then what future is awaiting even less deep Valkyrie?

From what I have seen, Eve Valkyrie is a different type of game. Its a fast paced spaceship FPS. Something to get you a quick space themed gaming fix.

I guess you didn't realise you bought a space sim and not a rpg mmo. Shocked

On release there will be the whole know Galaxy to explore mathematicaly mapped out to the best of modern science.
Some 400billion systems to explore on a 1:1 scale of our very own Milky Way, and as the developers said it would be dispointing if there wasn't alien life out there.

Also bollocks you did everything in 10days, absolute bollocks. And p.p.s. It's the frikin beta.

Anyone playing the Elite games these last 30 years understands that Elite4 is not EvE online, nor is it trying to be. The game is fundamentally built on a different premise, with the player being just a small part of the food chain instead of the immortal that can change the course of history. The Elite games are built around the concept of being a pilot that can do whatever the **** he wants as a pilot in a vast, dystopian and pretty "convincing" take of our Milky Way a thousand+ years in the future. Whether they succeed to provide that experience or not remains to be seen (what we have seen is good although there are a lot more to implement and FIX for the game to be launch worthy), but people that think of playing Elite like EvE are certainly going to be disappointed.

Having played all Elite games (and some fan based games around them like Pioneer and Oolite), I certainly don't view it as competition to my EvE playstyle, but simply to my overall time allotted to gaming. Elite is Elite, nothing more, nothing less. If FDEV manage to make a game out of this, you will grab your HOTAS, rift and headphones (****, the sound design is brilliant), strap a Buttkicker to your...butt and jump like a rainbow trout every time the wife comes to shake you so that you start paying attention to her again, stop making injured seal sounds, or go to work. Because, YOU'RE IN SPACE MUTHAFUCKA!!

On the other hand, SC is built to accommodate a lot more mechanics and game concepts that EvE strives on (from multi-thousand player corporations to territorial warfare). If CIG succeeds, I see myself engaging more in emergent gameplay in the SC universe, simply because it adds a lot of things that I am interested in (like multi-crewed ships, FP gameplay and the (same as EvE) ability to extract meta-gaming tears from people paying thousands of dollars for space pixels.

And EvE? EvE remains the go-to place for elegant space motherfuckery, a shiny, glistening mountain stream of ****, malevolence, tears and nerd fueled rage. Everyone wants a sip, and everyone wants to stop drinking. EvE online is an acquired taste, but if you taste it then nothing else can copy or substitute it. The Durian of space games has our souls embedded in its rotting flesh, and I will certainly continue to come back for more spoonfuls.

No buts or ifs.
