become the only thing from the 80s that is still cool, and not just kinda cool, but very cool.

He is the ultimate pop culture reference right now.

No one comes close, not Don Johnson, Hulk Hogan, Tom Selleck, not even LeVar Burton. Not Whoopi Goldberg, Patrick Swayze, and OK maybe Kevin Bacon.

Was it because of Baywatch? That David Hasselhoff has captured the hearts and minds of not just 80s children, but 90s kids as well?

Knight Rider. You can't beat a show were a car regularly outperforms the star.

Maybe because the Germans loved him, and he stayed big there during the long drought after Baywatch? I know during the early '00s around the San Francisco area there was a young hipsters Hass pseudo-cult. In a spoofy way, kind of like the Chuck Norris thing. Partly because Germany still took him seriously at the time. OK, no idea really.

There's a difference between being a pop culture icon and a pop culture joke. He's the latter.

Kevin Bacon? Icon. Swayze? Icon. Hogan? Icon. Don Johnson? Joke. LeVar? Joke. Selleck? Actual actor. Hasselhump? Joke. Sting? Joke. Cosby? Insane. Vanilla Ice? God.
