The Rorqual currently suffers from the same problem that every other mining related ship suffers from. Sitting Duck Syndrome.

Sure, it's got drones. wheeee..

I would predict that unless CCP turns it into a battle-worthy capital ship, it will still be relegated to the status of glorified POS module.

If they want to see Rorquals in asteroid belts, they need to allow them in high-sec, because other than deep-blue Null, it's not going to happen.

No time suggested but there's a little hint hint in the dev-blog thread......

Make the Rorqual a mobile POS, but with a lot less HP than a POS has.

Make it so it can deploy in belts, with the shield up and allow other ships to park inside your shield for protection and allow them to actually mine the asteroids that are inside the shields too.

Make it so it cannot warp when deployed, and make it so those mining ships sharing the shields with you cannot warp while inside the shield with the Rorqual. Will have to exit the shield, or wait for it to come down to warp.

Leave the main defense as drones, like they are now.

Just a couple of ideas I have had in the past. Kinda sucked when they moved the compressions to the POS.

As much as I sympathize with all the other rorqual pilots, and can agree that something needs to happen if they want our rorquals to be used in the belts, and more importantly, to be worth using there in the belt, it's clear that your post is built upon a few misconceptions like this one. Using a pos is not cheaper for ore compression than a rorqual. Assuming you are living out in nullsec, you are using a rorqual for gang boosting, which uses a small amount of heavy water per cycle to run your industrial core. Assuming you are not trying to get yourself killed, you are already doing this inside of a pos. So, to then compress your ore, at the end of a long mining session can be done at the tail end of a siege cycle, or simply a new one, for a small amount of heavy water. The cost is well under 1 million isk to compress a nearly limitless amount of ore as long as you have it on hand in arrays, or a freighter is holding it close to you.

Using a pos to do so, however, presumes that you have the roles to access and use a compression array, which involves some minor degree of trust in a corporation, and s not always afforded to every member. The cost of doing compression in both, is neglible, considering you already have the rorqual, and if you have the rorqual, you already have a pos. The difference comes in access, of which the rorqual is much easier, assuming you are not in highsec.

The rorqual doesnt need some massive shield. It doesnt need a huge addition of hitpoints, it doesnt even need better defences. A simple reduction to the industrial timer, down to say, 90 seconds, and 75 seconds on the tier 2 variant, with the indy core skill reducing siege time by 10% per level (down to 45, and 36.75) would not only make them safe enough to have located in the belt, since you could get out quickly, but it would make the stupid skill worth training past level 1, where currently it is not. Reward pilots who invest the time to train it up. |

It also wouldnt hurt if they had an additional access range, allowing them to open any container within say, 150km on grid, while in siege. Sure, there are capital tractor beams, but they are cumbersome, take up valuable highslots, and require a LOT of work if you have many miners mining at the same time. A dramatic access range increase would allow the rorqual to scoop up ore from lots of cans without micromanaging all those cans.

Ok, so CCP hates the Rorqual. It no longer is needed to compress ore as POS facilities do it far cheaper. It's getting a nerf to hauling distance that Jump Freighters can exceed easily so that role is gone. It's far cheaper to fly an Orca to receive similar mining buffs so that role is deprecated. So CCP, when you gonna give the Rorquals a little luv'n?

CCP Fozzie has said that they need "back end changes" to take place before they can work further on the Rorqual. That isn't an quote because I cannot find the quote but I remember reading it and that was what he was saying.

The jump changes before they were changed made it very clear that JFs and Capital Industrial Ships (CIS) where being kept separate from other capital drive using vessels. From this we could infer that with the CIS may be receiving a role change,

Personally I'm thinking that they want to encourage mobile mining operations so we may see Rorquals turning into something like mobile POS that allows mining boosts but also has a protective force field and very strong defensive statistics. Perhaps add the ability to have a jump bridge module (that only works on mining barges/exhumers) and improved compression abilities.

No idea really but those are a couple of the really left field ideas I've been throwing around in discussions with other pilots I know.

I'm probably wrong but they would require "back end changes" to make work :)

i wanna see a change to the roqual so that it can fly into a belt, scoop up a whole rock, and process it internally for some time passively
