I was wondering what is the best ship type for pvp, a battlecruiser or battleship, or something else even? I'd like something that is good with tanking. Maybe even give me specific ships to look into. And what are the modules that help you tank?

Also can someone explain active tanking and buffer tanking to me and the differences.

It depends on many factors like what kind of PvP you're doing, your fleet composition etc. Generally speaking a Battlecruiser is more useful in a small gang situation due to mobility and it has an easier time dealing with smaller ships, Battleships are very bulky which means you can easily get caught by something fast and held there till backup arrives. For something like solo PvP mobility is king and for this reason frigates and cruisers are much more popular for this because you can pick your fights.

As for buffer vs active, buffer tanks are much more useful with logi and also if there is alot of dps on field, active tanks are generally good for small gangs where you can tank the incoming dps or kill enough stuff to reduce dps to a point your tank can handle. However this isn't a rule and you'll see buffer in small gangs as well, although active tanks are rare in large fleet fights. Active also really shines with some isk thrown at it (faction modules, links, implants etc)

Edit//
Also the modules that help you tank are hardeners (passive and active), armor plates, shield extenders, shield boosters, armor repairers, damage controls and capacitor modules

This is more or less for PVP :

Active Tank : Armor Repair modules. Shield boosters.
Buffer : No active repair modules like stated above but a f*ck ton of Hitpoints and good resistances.
Passive : Shield tanks with good resistances and the best possible shield recharge rate/buffer mix. (PVE)
Usualy they are fit to require 0 cap. therefore valid for lvl5 mission tanking but pretty useless for pvp

There are also some special snowflakey things like sig tanking/kiting but you are better off googling that.

There are many fits for many different ships out there but here are some basic examples to give you an idea on how the different styles are usualy fit.

In summary :

Active tanking ( armor ) : requires armor repair modules and cap boosters. armor damaged is repaired in bursts to manage cap.

Active tanking ( shield ) : todays best practice is ASB's. Cap booster feeded shield boosters. used to repair shield damage in bursts to manage the amount of cap booster charges left. It is also possible to fit a cap booster and standard shield booster which is much harder to manage but can be more efficient.

Buffer tanking : good resistances and a good amount of hitpoints.

passive tanking : good resistances, decent hitpoints and high recharge rate.

~ Hope that wasn't TL'DR and helps understand what the different tanking styles are about.

Luwc I don't know about the OP, but I found your post one of the most useful I've seen on this forum.
I'd give you +100000 if I could.

If you head right for battleships and head out to low or null you'll probably regret it. T1 battleships are fairly weak right now, blops are effective, but they're SP intensive and are getting a de-facto nerf soon, and marauders can be powerful in certain situations, though they've very vulnerable to being hot-dropped and neuts. Battlecruisers are very slow in a speed intensive meta. You'll find that right now, mobility and range are the kings of the battlefield.

If you're interested in pvp, start small and cheap. Join a corporation that will help furnish you with cheap ships and teach you how to pvp. Build a skill plan, or use someone else's skill plan. Even tech one frigates fitted with tech one modules are useful.

A few good corps/alliances to join:

Brave newbies: They live in null now and offer free skillbooks, cheap ships, and a LOT of content. The only issue here is that there isn't a lot of other stuff going on in null right now, so they get messed with quite a bit.

E-UNI: Similar to BNI. They offer an extensive database of knowledge dedicated to teaching players from day one to bitter vet.

Red vs Blue: These guys offer eternal high-sec chaos, combined ops, and over-all fun.

Feel free to eve mail me if you have questions.

EDIT: As far as suggestions of specific ships go I have a few favorites ill share. I particularly love the ancillary rep enyo and dual rep ishkur. They both have a wide engagement profile for comparatively few SP and isk. 1600 plate vexors are a blast, too. I've also had fun with dual large ASB cerbs fitted with RLMLs. They're very tough and CRUSH frigates, destroyers, and kitey cruisers. Dual web autocannon ruptures make short work of fast tackle, and are pretty tough to boot. A trick I've been using lately is to keep a mobile depot and an armor repper in my buffer tanked ships, so that if I survive an encounter, I can repair and be ready for the next one.

maybe train up for heavy assault cruisers? cruiser hulls with (most) massive tank, good agility, bc/bs dps (if brawler fit), good speed with a bonus to mwd sig radius...

they are pretty much baby battleships, with non of the disadvantages - besides raw hp - and lots of stats that are way better then bc/bs lvl and they are about as 'cheap' as t1 bs hulls
