It's more about which path to head along ?

To use heavy drones you need Drones 5

To use Tech 2 drones you need drone operation 5 of that specific size

Tech II drones come in all sizes, and are useable by a majority of ships of cruiser size or higher (it's a rare cruiser or heavier that doesn't have a drone bay). Heavy drones are much more specialized - there aren't many ships outside of Gallente or Amarr (or the SOE ships, the Guristas Rattlesnake and maybe the Serpentis Vindicator) that can make effective use of them.

then go for the t2 in lights and meds ... you are more likely to use them -- unless you plan on being nothing but a BS pilot - which is rarely the case these days .. more likely to use cruisers, and t2 cruiers and t2 frigs etc.. so go with the t2 for now .. still "need" to eventually get the heavies too to round out your char ..

The Gecko was given to us by CCP as a 11th anniversary gift. There are a still lot of them available, and they still sell for roughly 28m each.

Geckos are currently unique in their class. They are essentially a fighter in the guise of a heavy drone, and are the only drone to do all damage types ("rainbow" damage). Geckos do more damage than a single heavy drone, and have more hit-points.

A drone-reduced ship has less than 5 drones, but drone bonuses that make the smaller amount of drones effectively the same, or even more.

Example: The Rattlesnake can deploy 2 heavy drones (or one Gecko), and do the damage of 7.5 heavy drones (or 3.75 Geckos). The Rattlesnake also has a bonus to drone hit-points, so those drones have 3.75 times more hit-points, making them very tough.

I do not reckon it, I know it does.
As a consequence I have send a report to CCP for A. opening a troll thread in NC Q&A and B. malicious misquoting.
