Why is Charon still the most popular Freighter?

I mean, it seems to have gotten heavily nerfed with the recent changes to Freighters. It used to have far more cargo capacity than the others, but now that difference has been reduced to almost nothing, yet it's not fast nor tanky.

What gives? Is it just inertia, people keep buying and using Charons out of habit, instead of looking into whether other Freighters are better suited to their needs?

Maybe they already trained into one freighter and they feel that the differences between them aren't enough to warrant spending more game time training into others?

Or perhaps there is a feature or stat in Charons they want/require that you don't see or understand? I'm not claiming I do, I don't fly freighters, but it is possible that some aspect of that particular hull might have something not immediately apparent to those who don't fly them.

If I were to get a freighter I'd probably go with a Providence. They're just beautiful ships. If I'm going to spend hours traversing the galaxy, I want my ship to be a work of art. Or...wait for it...a work of Ark.

Charon has the titanic cargohold which means even tank fit you have a bit more space to use.
though the tank is sub-par compared to the obby and the providence

Maybe they keep the Charons because they already had them before the changes and the time and cost to move to something else just isn't worthwhile?

But have you looked at how small the cargohold difference has become?

even if its only a few hundred cubic meters depending on what your moving it can mean more ISK/hr or maybe enough materials for one more ship even if its just a frigate, which is more ISK/hr

Some of it might be the added expense of switching: why spend the extra ISK for the new skillbooks, and go through the hassle of trading in the Charon on another freighter class, when you've already got a Charon?

For new people coming up the ladder, there's less reason to start off on the Charon route, true, but for trained freighter pilots, it's probably a case of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".

Well now you made me check.

Cargofit
Charon vs Obby is 5,7%, 1205k vs 1140k m3 rounded, ~65k m3 difference.
Rhea vs Anshar is 4,7%, 373k vs 356k m3, ~17k m3 difference

Significant? Not to me, but maybe to some. For the JF that's 21 hauls to save a trip, regular freighter it's only 17 trips, though I'd imagine a JF sees fully packed cargo holds more frequently then a F.

As others have said, if I already have caldari freighter V trained on an alt, why should I buy a plex/spend real world money to spend time training to deal with the hassle of selling one freighter for a different freighter if the Charon currently meets all my goals?

The freighter skill book is 75m ISK and it's a 10x multiplier skill.

Pretty much this. If my alt starts losing Charons frequently, I'll train for one of the armor ones. Until then, I don't see much point.

Will I get banned for boxing!?!?!

Rhea is still the only one to haul three General Freight Container at the same time and those cans are useful for sorting the personal belongings of pilots.
