I'm going away for christmas, but need to log on to do various things. Is it possible to install the client on a memory stick so that I don't need to install it on another pc/laptop?

EVE does not need an install, just a copy of the client folder and nothing else.

Whether you also copy the settings (for win7, \Users\win_user_name\AppData\Local\CCP\EVE is the parent folder, the proper folder name becomes obvious once you go in there) or not is your choice.
I would say copy, because it's much easier to not have to reconstruct your favourite overview settings and whatnot else, and it's not a large thing (just ignore the "cache" subfolder)

So, yes, if you have a large enough stick, just copy EVE over and play it anywhere.

There's a option to create a shortcut that will save your EVE settings locally in the install directory as well. Should be useful when you play from a usb stick. Search around and you'll find it.
