How to fix the server-side issues: upgrade client-side.

Flawless victory.

I could agree with that, but for a toon named FIX LAG?

That sounds like a chronic issue

EVE has been plagued with server-side lag since it was made, and it will keep on being plagued by it until CCP figures out a way to scale things a lot better. The current way of doing things, everything in a solar system in one process, means that no matter how much they optimize or how much hardware they throw at the problem, they're still going to hit on a limit where they just can't cope with what's going on.

If they do manage to split it into a per character process, that limit is still there, but you're going to have to really work hard to reach it, and CCP could scale out properly by adding more servers and spread players even thinner across the server park.

As Veritas says, however, there are lots of issues with going down that path. I can only hope that if they do go down this path, th at they can fix the problems inherent in this design. It would be nice to have a day where lag was just more or less gone.

The American public's reaction to the change was poor and the new cola was a major marketing failure. The subsequent reintroduction of Coke's original formula, re-branded as "Coca-Cola Classic", resulted in a significant gain in sales, leading to speculation that the introduction of the New Coke formula was just a marketing ploy

Sorry to derail, but i just noticed that... Lol

Was the only bit I commented on, but someone ganked my reply. ..

There are good ships,

And wood ships,

And ships that sail the sea

But the best ships are Spaceships

There's different amounts of feasibility for different aspects, however. For instance, moving the physics simulation of each individual ship to a per user computation unit calls into question how collisions are resolved, since it would be two independent simulations agreeing on exactly the same event. I doubt that would be an easier problem to solve than just having a unit of space be the computational unit for physics.

What about middle ground?

If per solar system is too broad and per user too narrow, what about per grid?

Moving objects into and out of grids (aka warping) should give Dogma enough time to move data structures around to different simulator units, while keeping the relative size of each simulator within manageable boundaries and eventually find the Holy Grail of on-the-fly load/node (re)balancing within the mesh.

A grid can still contain thousands of ships.
